Hey i tried seaching but didnt come up with too much luck. i have a 91 supra but i have no knowledge on car audio and was looking for advise. i know i need 6 1/2 speakers in the front but what do i need for the speakers next to the rear seat and the speakers located behind the rear seats? do i really need all 4 speakers in the back or would 2 be fine and if so which 2? as for speaker selection what would you guys recommend because i was looking at either alpines or rockfords.

I spoke with a heap of car audio people before I did mine, and you have to remember your audio setup is a 16yo design. A nice set of 6x9 in the back in their own boxes will sound a lot better then replacing all four of the small rear speakers. This is just my opinion, I actually tried to replace them and found the insulation to be no good as the old ones are built into all the plastic moldings. If your dead keen on putting them in there original spots however i wouldn't bother with the ones next to the back seats just do the back two. HTH

I prefer the speakers in the front. Get a quality 6.5 component system for the front and have some 4 inchers in the back for filler. I was a 6X9 in the back of the car before, until I was talked into trying a quality component in the front. I will never go back. My .02. Its all up to what you like and can afford. But for having a 6 speaker system, I think its over kill unless 2 of them are subs.

Of those two, the Alpine are better IMO. A silk dome tweeter is much nicer than a hard shell tweeter, the hard shells are so intense it sounds like it'll cut flesh.

As for the speakers, go with 4 - two in front, two in the back seats. You can fit a 5.25 inch in the back seats with some mucking about. Skip the ones in the hatch, they are pretty much useless in every way. Too far away, point the wrong way, they will just make for muddy sound unless you have a real pro level deck to manipulate their signals.

My personal favorite speakers at the moment are JL audio, I'm running 4 of them in my current setup, and it sounds very nice.

I agree with Grim on this.

I replaced my rears with 4" rockfords which sounded pretty good, but just recently replaced them again with Alpine 5.25"s and it sounds way better.

the 4"speakers in the hatch near the quarter glasses are intended for bass, thats why they have that molded plastic encloser.bose does stuff like this alot, the maxima,300zx have these in their doors.if you replace all the factory with good quality speakers and pull out all the frequances they have a hard time producing.ad a seperate sub and bam, you'll be rocking and rolling.i have a 12" sub that drops down into the spare tire(upside down spare) with a pvc extension.its nice and hidden, still room for the targa

I have the same car as you and was thinking of doing audio upgrade too but it was too expensive and I only got the 350RMS PolkMomo amp for my sub instead. I would just go with a good set of new speaker in the front and hook them up to an amp and use stock in the rear, only replace them if they really bad since you won't be sitting in the back anyway. A sub in the back is all you need.

I personally have two tweeter installed in the back which help in making the sound crisper and louder :icon_mrgr . Mess around with the balance to get good sound.

as of now, it looks like ill be getting 6.5" apline type r's in the front and 5 1/4" rockford fosgates in the back.
well i was thinking about replacing everything because my car audio right now is just wierd. my stock headunit will only play cds on a very low volume even if i turn it all the way up. also, the speakers on the drivers side of this car doesnt work at all for some reason and i dont know why. im also getting a good deal so that helps:)

I have Alpine Type R components in the front, type r components in the rear seat, and a type r sub in the hatch 10", powered be a PPI amp and a monster digicap, with monster 401 xln for interconnects and monster mini z series for speaker wire. I'm pushing 100watts to the front and rear speakers and 400watts to the sub. Don't waste anytime on the speakers in the hatch, they suck. Anyone that knows anything about car audio knows that you want your best and biggest speakers in the front and round not 6x9's. get some good speakers and get an amp to run them. I remember when I just had the fronts running with the amp, it sounded awesome. I added the rears and it threw the imaging off a little so I disconnected the tweeters and now my mid bass is awesome. Anymore questions LMK
