Tell him to pull the efi fuse and crank it a few times and see if its getting any pressure.

oil pressure is mainly built up by the big ends. the pump just pumps it around.

it isnt something daft like the dip stick left out is it? i beleive this can affect it but ive not tried it before

This is TOTALLY bogus info !! Please...don't submit crap like this. Google to find out how engines work before you speak.:icon_evil

uh, yeah if your oil pump stop working your motor would lock up. If you really want to know whether or not its working properly and the gauge in the car isnt giving any readings you should buy another gauge or try replacing the oil pressure sending unit on your car to double check. It may be working, but not at an optimal level. Me personally, Ive never heard of an oil pump failing on one of these cars. I have been away for awhile though, so who knows.

usually the wire is fried around where ther harness crosses ovr the top of the t-stat. atleast mine was. and, btw, please dont believe that the op only circultaes oil the pumpo is what builds the pressure to circulate it. who ever wrote that the op has nothing to do with building pressure should be dragged out behind an old building and beat for a long time with the dumb ass stick. you can also try grounding out the gauge itself for a second or 2 to see if the gauge still works. if so, replace the sending unit and the wire. just from my experience, thats what i had to do. it was an easy fix to something that gave me a massive headache.
