I'm a 27 year old auto tech student from portland Maine. ( I know, I know. Why did I wait so long to go to college?) I'm finishing up my second semester in the program. The reason I Joined this Forum is be cause I have an Ma70 in my drive way with a blown head gasket (but its been sitting there for about 5 years) So I thought I could use everything I learned in school to restore the the sweet Ma70. It is the top of the line model for the 88 model year. I want to keep it mostly stock with minor mods ( want to try to keep it street legal) Supra comes equiped with turbo, intercooler, oil cooler, supra monitor, LSD, 5 spd, leather, targa, climate control (Module was just recently replaced for 90 module) Manual boost controler (under hood, don't really know if it is stock) and every other option you can think of for that model year. Wanna keep it at about 350 hp or just under. But all that will only mater after I get the thing running again. Thanks for reading if anyone cares or has already done this then please message me. Also if you have parts please message me.

Welcome!

What are you thinking for a HG? Sticking with a original or you going with a MGH?
I know the procedure and the torque specs but I am yet to learn the timming settings and procedures. I may just end up rebuilding the whole motor. I was also thinking of buying a decent 7mgte and putting that in the car for now and then rebuilding the blown one. Save some time but every 7mgte I see on the internet goes for a grand or more. also another thing. wich lexus airflow meter is best to use for this motor. Are they all the same or does it have to come off of a certain motor?

If you are referring to the "Lex-AFM upgrade" I'm around 99% positive it's from the 1uz from the SC400 and LS400. I think all the other ones are around the same size as our 7m ones and really wouldn't help very much unless your stocker is dead.

If you've got the time and money a complete rebuild will probably yield much better results than just a gasket set (both will probably get the engine running, but full rebuild will add years to the engine's life if done correctly, whereas gasket set will just be fixing the current issue). And BTW it's SUPER monitor, not Supra monitor, Cressidas got them too :p

My motor has 150k+ on it so I've decided that a full rebuild will be necessary but what a bout a donor motor? where can I find one for a USDM for a good price? oh and one more thing, I heard that the Lexus air flow meter was an upgrade. If mine still works fine then I guess I'll keep it. Now I gotta go get the resitance specs so I can test the thing. I have alot to do to this thing and its winter still here in Maine. It snowed a bunch yesterday.

Well from what I've read, the only accurate way to test the actual AFM is with the car running. A spare is never a bad thing to have, if it's known working. 150K really isn't alot for a toyota engine, or any engine anymore really. The only engines I have planned on rebuilding is my 220K 2jzge (and thats mainly because it's going NA-T, so rebuild is for peace of mind more than anything) and a 209K 4A-C that spun a bearing (which I'm not going to do anymore, since I'm selling my SR5).

Donor motors can generally cost around $1K for a good reason, the parts off that motor are worth a decent amount and it's still a pretty demanded engine. You may be able to get lucky and find one in a junkyard, or find someone parting out a Supra Turbo, but in either of those cases there's probably a reason that it's being parted (which generally is engine related, unless it's wrecked). You could also pick up a 7MGE as a beater engine while your GTE is being rebuilt, but I think you would need to do some re-wiring due to lack of coil-packs, cps, turbo etc etc. (could be waaay off on this, dunno really, most people go GE>GTE not the other way around).

I have a red sr5 hatchback with a 4a-c. thats gonna be my next project. A buddy of mine has already started his so when he's done with his 20 valve swap he can help me with mine. He still has his 4a-c still ran when he removed it. I have access to an online data base. its called on demand5. Not the best in the world but if you have half a brain it will help out alot. I use it plenty. if Afm's show wave lenghts(analog) rather than a digital signal then you would have a much easier time testing it on the car. If it's a digital signal than just disconnect it and use an ohm meter. Thats how most honda sensors work.

No way I'm going GE. waste of time and money. I'd rather buy an old beater. Like an 81 honda. LOL!!!! my girlfriend wants my Old lex so I may make a deal with her.
