Hey all,

Newbie to Toyota Supra ownership, know a little something about turbo'd cars. Recently sold a 2002 WRX that I put a little love (and a lot of $$) into...

While it was a pretty car and I love 'er, decided it was too expensive to continue trying to go fast. I always hated that the car was fast from a dead stop, but evertime I got out on the highway I get my arse handed to me by all the stangs, vettes, cameros, etc etc.

Had a good friend couple yrs back who I met at local car show, had a 89 Supra and always yapped about '7mgte this, and 2jz that, supra shmooprah.... blah blah'. Anyways--- after a few rides in his 500rwhp MKIII I certainly came to realize what an awesome car the supra is.

Well I sold this WRX, and found a '88 MKIII with a 2JZ swap already completed with single turbo setup (T61 i think) - :aigo:

Couldn't pass it up. What a cool looking car, and a LOT of fun to drive fast.

anyways - I hope to learn some new stuff from the site (already have actually) and look forward to what will hopefully be a long romance with this car.

Did I mention how much I LOVE that 13psi can make this much RWHP on a car? 20psi and all the stops on my WRX didn't come close to the pull this car has at just 13psi with a manual boost controller and stock 20yr old intercooler. Iguess you'll have that with 1 litre difference in displacement and turbo that can flow WAY more air. My wife keeps telling me to wipe that sh_t grin off my face when I walk in the door from a ride in the new car. She hates anything that goes fast of course.

wrx is good out the hole but how about those highway pulls i'm sure you have tried?

Thanks all for the warm welcome - - heh :evil2: highway pulls? why I don't have any idea what you're talking about. Oh wait, is that where I a roll at about 3700rpms in 5th and then shift down to 4th and put the pedal to the medal? :sarcasm: don't tell my wife I'm doing this :icon_razz

In all seriousness, yes the highway pulls are, well how do i put it? Refreshing (no pun intended - Targa top :biglaugh: )

found car online, drove to SC from Cleveland, OH with buddy, drove car home. Plenty of highway tme and fun with everything from Misu 3000, to SVT Cobra, back to Mitsu Evo... LOTS of fun on that 650mile drive, car comfortable the whole way.

But really what I have found as well is how nicely the car pulls even in 2nd gear. As with any turbo car, seems you find the right rpm range, and you can pull hard, go fast. I expected the car to pull hard on the top, its what Supras are know to do. What I was concerned about prior, was driveability around town and off-highway, with a big single. And my verdict is this car is fantastic driving around. The extra torque available (i think due to my 'displacement' shock of a 2L boxer to a 3L inline), is FANTASTIC.

The suby with a big turbo has a smaller sweet rpm range, and constantly having to be above 3800rpm to go ANYWHERE gets old after 6yrs.

I find this car's gearing/torque makes it easier to drive. And for the all the hype of subys better handling cars, etc - I find myself more comfortable in this car going around tight corners (as long as the pavement is smooth) - the COG feels lower, I am obviously sitting lower, and the car just feels more predictable - The WRX always has you on your feet, sometimes feeling like i wasn't sure how close I was to the edge? I don't know, I don't consider myself to be a skilled driver really at all, so maybe I just had no clue about how to push the limits of an AWD car correctly - and maybe going fast in a RWD car is just 'easier' or feels that way anyways to me.

Suffice to say, I'm very happy so far. have some work cut out for me - sorry to rant so much. let me get it all out the system here, and then i'll shut up and get back to researching the forums as i've been doing obediently for a week or so now...

Pics of car below - 165,000 on the chassis, newer paint - 50,000 on an Aristo Clip and R154 tranny, 1JZ bell housing and flywheel. Swap done by Mainstream Performance in Powder Springs, GA - by the former owner.

Has a -SC6176S T4 turbo, stock intercooler - 13psi just under fuel cut, Dawes Devices mbc, Tial 44m wstgte, mkiv fuelpump, 3inch turbo back, Tokico Blue struts, H&R springs, 245's front, 275's rear on 17in Volk GTP's.

2nd and upward feels like it pulls HARD  . Former owner has not dyno'd it, the swap was pretty recent I think. He suggested it prolly making around 350 rwhp. The 'Butt-dyno compared to my 295 AWHP wrx suggests its doing much better than the wrx was in that category, and torque too for that matter (Especially up above 65mph).

Car needs me to... install/hookup a working speedo, power steering (have a good rack, needs installed), Adjustable fuel pressure regulator, S-AFC (or should I be getting a Apexi Neo - or both?), decent quality fmic, and some DYNO time. And then what do you think, I can run easy on pump at 20psi and make 410+ rwhp, fairly reliably? Or will the stock clutch and stock mkiv fuel pump not hack it? Also needs some heat shielding or thermomat near the foot wells in front -- getting alot of heat thru there on moderate to longer drives, and a nice radiator, stocker on here now leaks a smidge, may as well upgrade it. What about oil cooler upgrades, how necessary/popular?

Probably won't start in on these items for at least another 12months. Part of the deal with wifee was get the car, but can't spend money on it for first 12months. :(

Here's something that's been burning in my head, guess I should do a search first-- Do you all run water/alky injection? I haven't noticed much discussion on the topic, but haven't searched yet either. Just seems for $500 you can have a decent quality injection setup and could really help you up boost pressures on high octane pump gas - I'm all about good whp w/out having to spend arm and leg on Race Gas. (Even a WRX is fast on C16)

ok, all my blabbering is done now-- thanks for reading if you even got this far. By now I sound like an idiot - ah well, nothing new here. Back to my studies.... almost forgot-- pics of the car

good link, thank you Noah, i'm reading it as we speak.....

Where should I expect to find the MAF meter on the 2JZ? I am used to seeing it before the turbo inlet on the wrx's... appears this is not the case on the 2JZ... either that or maybe i haven't looked closely enough at the intake on this car yet ?

I know whos car that is er was. You have a good platform to start from.

First things first - rid that engine of the breather on the vavle cover and install a vacuum system.

Other than that...

WELCOME!

Ok thank you - What is this breather for? and why good to replace it?

sorry I'm novice at Supras, more comfortable under the hood with a flat four....

Benefits/effects from replacement? I found this thread on the topic about vaccuum, granted its for discussion on the 7M GTE, but it seems to suggest that Vaccuum system isn't all that necessary w/out cruise, power steering, etc.

http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16150&highlight=vaccuum+system

My car doesn't have those little goodies, so wouldn't I be ok w/out the vaccuum system? Or is the filter vent a bad idea with this setup?

Thanks all for the kind words about the car-- Been driving a bit more lately - All I can say is, its so nice having a 5th gear that can actually accelerate your car. Sometimes I feel like I'm in fourth but really I'm in fifth and it fools me. 5th on the wrx was absolutely WORTHLESSSS :biglaugh:

I hope the spend about the next 5yrs turning this car into something that is "Ride of the month" worthy. (5yrs cuz I'm going to need to save some money too in order to do it)
