My heater control valve just burst on me when i was going down the road.. steam everywhere. Anyways, what are its functions, is it simply an open/close valve? I want to replace it as quickly as possibly and I'm thinking I should just remove it and get a little elbow to put in its place.. will that do any harm?

That is exactly what it does and if you don't need heat in the winter you can bypass it. The valve allows hot water to enter the heater core.

Short answer: yes. You can put an elbow there.

Long answer: yes. As a quick fix, or even permanently, you definitely can put an elbow there.
All the valve does is either direct hot coolant to the heater core, or stop it from going in, and it only functions when the AC is on, so that there isn't hot coolant flowing through the core, heating up the previously cooled air.

My hot water runs all the time, as the VSV went out, so I just plugged the vacuum straight to the water valve.

As said above, the normally functioning water valve only shuts the water off when the setting is at 65*.

The flaps in the heater/ac will prevent air from going thru the heater core when the auto temp is set to 65*. Also, it moves more or less to send 'some' air thru the core when you set the temp higher.

When the a/c button is pushed 'on', the compressor runs/cycles all the time as its designed to do.

And...I started a thread on SF asking this question.

With all the BHGs these 7Ms get, would it do harm by stopping the flow of coolant thru the heater core?? (Not that the core is providing cooling, but that the flow out the head may be needed.)

The core inlet hose comes off the back of the head. Perhaps the Toyota engineers counted on the coolant to flow out here to provide better engine cooling. Thoughts....????:icon_surp

just a hint, but the metal nipples on your accordian pipe are perfect fits for those hoses. You can use them to make an elbow to connect to the hoses, assuming you have a spare accordian hose.
