i have this same problem, searched for weeks, then finally gave up. my next step is switching out the actual multifunction switch on the steering column.

yea i have silverstars, but the problem was there before i had em. i know the problem isnt my harness cuz i've replaced both my dash and chassis harness' (not because of this) but the problem is still there.

i just use a switch hooked up to the relay wires to control the headlights.

My borther had the same exact problem I bet you would like to know what it is?

Im not telling

J/K
He took them motor and harness from my 1986.5 supra and put it in his early model 1989 different color connectors but square motor mounts and basic layout is the same as 1986-1989.
He noticed the lights would stay on even when folded down it turned out that the large square engine connector had a ground on the connector that feeds the headlight relay normaly that ground is controlled by the hl switch & the integration relay #2 after trying different integration relay and headlight switches he bugged me until i found the problem.

Check the square body to efi connectors the headligh power goes through the engine harness make sure the wire colors match from one side of the connector to the other.

No the body connector plugs that go between the EFI ECU & engine at the firewall.

The connector is [1B] the pin is 7
You have a Red/Yellow wire there on both sides of the connector in 1986.5 models that goes from your integration relay or retractor control at the big square connector
this supplys a ground to that relay to turn on your headlights.

On my brothers car on pin 7 he had a ground wire on the body side of it so it would keep the headlights on all the time so we moved the red/yellow wire back onto pin 7 then they worked like normal

so you just looped where the ground was? where did the wire that was grounded go?

and do you happen to have a link to where it shows which pin is which? i looked in the tsrm but couldnt find it.

Dont give up now.

If the connectors are fine & wires

Pull out the headlight relay in the front junction box

Brown rectanglular box in junction box #2 behind the battery in the nose of the car.
If you pull it out your headlight lights should go off.
If they dont your junction box or headlight wires are bad.

If your headlights go off check pin 3 of the connector for a ground with meter ohm to ground from pin 3, or test light positive batery post to other end in pin1 headlight relay.

If you have a ground your relay is fine if not replace the headlight relay with a good one!

Next step is to check retractor control #2 if your headlights flip up and down correct with the headlight switch then the switch is fine.

if both the flip up operation & the headlight contol on off dont work its your headlight switch.

the easiest way to check the headlight retractor control or integration control #2 is to replace it with a know good one
The box is lockated and accessed through the driverside underthe steering wheel just change the box if that fixes it then the box.

The only thing left is a ground in the wiring and there is also a diode panel its the little square box baried behind the dash in the wiring loom in the blue plastic trim there is diodes in there for blocking other signals from feading other electronics i could look further into it if you dont find the problem right away.

I think you may find your problem in the headlight relay though the spring that retracts the swithc inside the headlight relay maybe bad.

I agree its almost as bad as taking an amp reading across + & - on a battery second thought just check the coil pins with a test light if you ohm the wrong pin to ground some meters may not like that and react bad.

You dont want to ohm +12vdc to ground meter and bodily damage may occure.
