+1, at the recent Auto Show here, there was a vendor who was selling those Ebay housings with HID's that he had on display... I happened to accidentally look at them and they blinded me so bad... btw, he was asking $75 for just the housings, told me they were his last set and they were a good deal :biglaugh:

Order them through there.

The E-codes are NOT DOT approved, but they're much better than any DOT lense.

Don't buy any bulbs with blue coatings on them (silverstars are one of them), read this http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/blue/blue.html

Hella makes an upgraded wiring harness with relays for under $100 (well worth it IMHO). I like my HID's, but they're a major pain in the ass and i'll be buy brand name stuff when I do it over again (projectors out of another car or Hella assemblies)

Right on. Hella E-codes are a fantastic housing for halogen bulbs. Get some good Osram bulbs, rewire the headlight harness (whether you buy the kit or do it yourself), and you'll be amazed at how much good, clean output you have.

Plug and play HID's in halogen housings are absolute terrible. I've been there, done that. My E-codes cast more usable light, with a better cutoff than the HID's ever did in those housings.

If you retrofit a set of OEM or quality aftermarket HID projectors, that's another story. In my opinion, you should only be running HID's if you have a cutoff like this:

So what kind of bulbs would you recommend in those housings if you are not going to upgrade the harness? I plan to do the upgrade down the road but for right now am just doing the e-codes and normal halogens. I had considered the PIAA's, but now I'm not sure...

Also I have been looking for the harness and relays hella makes and can't seem to find them.

I am a major fail at this...

well on the rallylight website I see the multitude of bulbs offered. I had planned on going with PIAA's but I have never seen them in person and am unsure if they are worth it. I did read that daniel stern lighting says they are not.

With regard to the replacement harness I still have not found that part.

Thanks,

Dave

I have had hella headlamps for nearly 18 years. 2 years in a mazda and then the past 16 years in my supra. No extra wiring, relays, nothing.

The bulbs I have are standard 35w low beams and 100w high beams. Yes 65w high beam are normal but when I hit the high beams it is like daylight. I hate hitting deer.

I have only had to replace each bulb once so far in 18 years, not bad.

Running Sylvania Silverstars here and very happy with them for the price. Got some good H4 housing in the garage for a possible HID setup later. Not sure yet.

HID's in DOT housings = OMGWTFBBQ glare monsters from hell
HID's in E-Code housings = less glare than a halogen DOT light

Cheap chinese HID's WILL drive you nuts as their quality just isn't there...
