Head Work

I am planning on taking my head into a machine shop and have it milled and get a 3 angle valve job. Are there other things I should have them do when I take it in?

Also what should I be expecting to pay for everything.

I was quoted from one place 170 for valves and 40 for milling.
Another place told me 200 for valves and 65 for millling.

Does that sound resonable?

since you are asking, you should also have them set the shims for your valve clearances. I assume that you dont have a lot of experience in this matter.

how hard is it to replace the shims yourself? I need to get mine done, and I don't have a lot of money. Plus the cams are tickin like mad when they come in contact with the shims. The head was completely rebuilt back to stock specs with ALL new parts...minus the fact that the retard who did it put all the wrong shims in. I need the car ready to race by sunday :)

I wouldn't do the shims myself, unless you have a bunch of different shims on hand or you have a lot of time to measure, buy, measure, buy, measure, buy........ .
That's why I had my shop that rebuilt my head also shim the valves. Hopefully they do a good job.
I've seen Stainless Steel valves for $20 to $22 each a while ago. I'm sure for $170-$200, you're not getting good SS valves.
You might also want to get a mild port and polish if you want to squeeze out all the performance.

upgradedsupra did the works, IIRC. Machining, 1mm oversized valves, upgraded springs, new hardware, port & polish, new valve seals... for about $1700.

If you've got the resources, that's the route to go. If not, valve seals, valve grind, machine the surface, and you're good to go.

Well from my experiences from at least three shops it goes like this:

Milling the head is about $65 for a low RA that is perfect for a MLS HG (higher RA's don't seem to be cheaper).

Valve Jobs go for about $200 if you do the valve clearance deal.
I think it is about $100 more if they do that part.

Shims should be obtained from a machine shop as I believe it is the cheapest route.

The valve clearance procedure: that is NOT in the TSRM (at least not my version).
It is only briefly mentioned at MA-8 item 12.

It is however described in the Haynes manual on page 1-30.

I wonder if I should do a quick write up on how to do that procedure for the MK3 Supra Information/Reference section. My way is a little different than how it is stated in the manual … eh, I will write it up, just give me a bit time.

Last time I had the supra head worked on, I got a port and polish (flowed within 1 cfm), a 5 angle grind, new valve seals installed, a 12 Ra surface, the cam journals line bored and it ran me $100...
but then again, I'm a bastard.
My honda head was $50 for upgraded exhaust springs, 3 angle grind, surface, assembly, new valve stem seals and hanging a set of press fit pistons...
Your prices sound "average" though... My advice is to make friends with a machinest.

Valve Clearance Adjustment

Well, instead of doing a write up as I once said I would in this thread, I just happened to find that John Lunsford (JBLMK3) already has a write up on this procedure:

Thanks John for all the info on your site.
