Is there a simpler walkthrough of the cylinder head removal of a 7mge than the TSRM? I have started this undertaking and thought I would be able to take off the intake manifold without removing the upper plenum and throttle body from it but the TSRM says you have to take every little thing apart. If you do have to take it all apart, what is the best way to label all of the hoses so you know where they go back? I have plenty of time to do this seeing as how I don't actually have all of the money to actually do the job completely right now. So if anyone could help me through this I appreciate it.

I wanna do this right but I also wanna keep it as simple as possible seeing as how I've never removed a cylinder head myself before.

Also, my plan was simply to take the head off, inspect for BHG and cracks in head, have a machine shop completely overhaul the head, and put it all back together again like new. But does anyone have any suggestions as far as performance mods go?

You can put a piece of tape around the vac line and one on the port and color them the same color, just get a pack of sharpies all different colors. You only need to have the colors for the general area they dont ALL have to be a different color all over the engine.

I'm beginning my head removal as we speak and I'll be starting a thread on it. I've never removed a head before either, but feel free to watch my "build" thread and watch what I do. You may even get to witness a mistake of mine and in turn learn how NOT to do it. :)

Remove the least amount possible, and label EVERYTHING. For coolant lines, vac., and harness connectors, label them with tape and a pen(I usually write "Inj.2", pull the tape off the roll, and wrap it around the harness by the connector, so that the ends of the tape are together, leaving a tail). If you find it necessary, put your bolts and nuts in zip lock bags, and label them as well(Intake, exhaust, valve covers, etc.). Easiest way to keep track of everything, especially if your not pulling it apart, getting the machine work done, and putting it back together in a couple days.

Yeah this is definately going to span several weeks. I wanted to get it torn down quick like but after I think about it, I don't have NEARLY all the money needed so there is no rush. I've already taken off a lot though and have stuck most of the bolts and unfamiliar pieces in bags and labeled them. I'll probably spend a day with some masking tape just labeling every cotton pickin hose under there that way I don't get them mixed up. I think I may end up replacing most of the hoses before it's all said and done with though. Atleast half of them are dry rotted and cracking so it's about that time.

suprarx7nut, is that the link to the head thread in your signature? "My BHG Job"

I say follow the manual and dont be afraid to take it all apart. Everything that is taken apart is a chance to inspect/replace anything that needs it. The more you take out/apart the more you can replace. If time isnt a rush its a good way to get to know your motor and do a real freshening up of those old gaskets/hoses. Plus you can clean it all up too the more its apart, cleaning is cheap and makes a big difference.

Put all the bolts in baggies labeled, take pics as you go so you have a before reference to where stuff goes. Following the manual also will give you a good place of reference, if you stop for a week then go back you may be lost. It will be easier to look back at the manual and see your at step 5 and see what to do next. Rather, going your own way and forgetting where you left off or what goes on/off next.

I did my hg having never took a head off a motor, followed the manual and it went smooth.
