I once asked for a price to have one replaced, and the price I was told was enough I could buy another turbo car. I did just that, and now that car also needs a head gasket. I'm gonna replace that one myself.

I'm not sure whats behind your name (MK3Concepts), but I think you would benefit from a little knowlege of your motor.

If you have a full set of tools (10mm, 12mm,14mm, and a phillips head screw driver) you should attempt to do it yourself. Get yourself a camera, and some zip lock bags for each set of bolts. Pay attention to what you take apart, and remember to come back to Supramania.com every night. These guys are more than willing to help you, and know more than Toyota about your car.

ForcedTorque is dead on. I've had my 90 Turbo for 2 months. Four weeks of that, I had it torn apart in my garage to take care of the BHG I didn't recognize when I bought the car. Estimates from area shops were about $2000, versus about $800 myself and that included buying some tools, having a machine shop handle the valve work, and $50 in rebuilding part of my camshaft position sensor for no reason (live and learn). Overall, I probably spent more than most people in the forum because of my inexperience.

The most involved work I had done before this was replacing some sensors, a starter, and tie rod ends. Follow the TSRM (available free online), label EVERYTHING, and take plenty of pics. I even kept a spreadsheet cross-referencing digital picture #'s vs. TSRM step numbers, vs Haynes step numbers. Probably overkill, in retrospect. An extra set of hands doesn't hurt, either.

When all was said and done, it started right up and has been PERFECT for more than a week, now. Also, make sure you have a torque wrench and if you're buying tools, the ratcheting, swiveling wrenches I was advised to buy (10, 12, 14 mm @ $16 ea) were well worth it in spite of the price.

haha alrights..sry i know more about the mk2 cause thats my daily driver and as for the mk3 i started wit a N/A auto..and my dad had da engine rebuilt on it..now i found a 92supra turbo 5spd..only problem is it overheats cuase of the headgasket..our friend mechanic was charging us like 12oo to get it fixed..so yah..and the price of the car itself was 35oo with about 136ooo miles on it..does that sound reasonable cause our mechanic said to negotiate and make the price lower...my friends are better mechanics than i am..and we can do it ourselves..just my dad don't feel safe about it =/

Agreed, I have not replaced a HG in the 7m yet but have on 4g63 turbos. Basically you can learn how from people on here and manuals, the main tip I'll give is don't skimp on anything. Do it right and you won't have to do it again. The people here are great as everyone else has said. Just be clear on what you ask get into specifics, pick these supra junkies brains for every detail 7m HG related. Also LouKY you ever need any help turning wrenches on the supra i'm like 1.5 hours away. Especially if you overhaul the engine or anything big, I'm willing to lend a hand.

that sounds like a pretty reasonable price, but i would still do it myself, that way YOU know how to do it, and you also know the condition everything is in, it's just better that way... And don't be scared, you've got supramania! If you are unsure about anything, get on SM first, you don't want to screw anything up... Also, if you want i can give you my phone # to call with any questions, or Aaron at driftmotion may be able to help you out more effectively... Just go to Driftmotion.com...

You are going to need the following things (among others):

•Replacement OEM hg from Toyota: $85-100
•ARP head studs: $102 (from http://wpsracing.com/)
•A can of Permatex Brake Quiet: $5?
•Oil (to change the oil) & a Filter: $20-50
•About 2 bottles of Coolant $16
•Engine Head gasket set: (call Aaron to get the best price)
•Tube of "Toyota Seal Packing": $12
•New Turbo Oil line gaskets from Toyota (like $6)
•Tools:
•Full socket and ratchet set w/ lots of different extensions
•Torque Wrench (got mine for $25 @ Autozone)
•9/16" 12-point deep-socket
•12mm x 1.25 pitch Tap <<I think?
•Basically just get all of the basics...

^^That's all I can think of right now... add to it if you think of other stuff guys...

You should put every bolt, EVERYTHING in seperate ziplock baggies, and label each one with a marker as you go...and use masking tape and a marker to label EVERY vacuum line/hose/wire/connector you come across, and make sure to label injector connectors, and spark plug wires...

Any Questions? lol

Thanks! A little help has gone a long way so far, and it's good to know that somebody with a little know how isn't too far away. I'm hoping a major overhaul isn't anything I need to do anytime soon, but as far as I know the previous owner still has the pre-JDM shortblock and I've been thinking about calling him to see if it's still around so I can try doing a complete rebuild.

I've been wanting to meet a few MKIII owners in the area, but the upcoming meets are not going to work for me. I think there's one in Indy, but it's the weekend of the Kentucky Derby. Chicago's just about as bad for me. Maybe next year?
