Has anyone rebuilt their manual transmission themselves?

I got a rebuild kit for my W58, but I see there are several special gear pullers and installers that you need to change the bearings on this gearbox. Has anyone here done it without them? I hesitate to spend a huge amount of money on tools that I might only use once. I priced one of the gear pullers and it was over $600.

Some people used a press to push all the gears out the shaft and the usual snap ring tools IIRC and magnet would be needed for those lock balls. TSRM is a great guide though.

i rebuilt my r154 without bearing pullers. i used two plates of steel but one had a slot cut out of it to slide nicely behind the bearings. attached the plates together with two threaded rods with nuts and used those to pull the bearings off. putting new bearing on, i used the old ones on top of the new ones so i could hit them with a rubber mallet

I just finished rebuilding my r154, we used gear pullers and a shop press - I can't imagine attempting to dismantle it without the pullers, hell, there were times when I thought the big heavy Toyota gear puller was about to snap... Maybe mine was just assembled by godzilla or something...

I attempted a rebuild earlier this year and had the same problem, except my gear puller broke. I might give it another shot over the winter. I'd really like to find a MKIV W58 in good shape though, and swap that in instead. I know this alloy plate W isn't going to last, especially with loose bearings. It really whines under a load, even with really heavy gear lube in it. I'm using straight weight 190 synthetic.
