Guys w/o cam gear covers how audible are your gears/belt?

Trying to narrow down where a squealing is coming from in my engine bay. It's really starting to get annoying. At first, and I still somewhat do think, it was my PS pump, but it's a different kind of sound than a worn out pump makes. And poking my ear around the engine bay it seems to be coming from the front of the motor in the cam and cam gear area. I'm running w/o a cam gear cover b/c mine was broken when I got my motor.

It also seems like it could be the accesory belt, but it has very few miles on it, does time wear them out? It's been about 2 years since I've driven the car as much as I am now so I'm starting to notice all these things and wanting to fix them.

I'll get a video of it up later, will probably help, as sounds are kind of hard to describe by typing.

When I took mine off, it didnt make any noise. But, tlo said, the belt could just be too tight.

P.S. The girl in your avatar is HOT!!! If she's your girl, I apologize. Lucky you though.

LOL I could only wish she was mine, and even if she was, I would take no offense to anyone saying she's hot. :icon_bigg

So it will loosen up, and the noise should stop am I understanding that correctly, or do I need to adjust the tension on it?

if its the belt it should.... but of course not too loose.... there is a proper way for everything though.. a way of measuring the give of the belt (ive only done it with the 7m's timing belt personally though) maybe someone else can chime in :)

and yes she is hot... yowza :)

jz engines use a spring loaded timing belt tensioner that's preset, so I don't see how it can get to the point where it's too tight. it could be your timing belt idler pulley making the squealing noise if it's coming from the timing belt area. that's the only thing in there that spins other than your crank gear and cam gears.

Take a metal tube and hold it to the waterpump, ps-pump, generator or whatever you suspect is making the noise and put your ear on the other side, it worked for me to locate a worn out bearing from the waterpump.

PS pump replaced and it wasn't that, I'm thinking it's the belt now. It wasn't doing it at right after I replaced the pump but driving the car over to friends house the noise started and sounded exactly the same. We put some multi-purpose grease on the belt while the car was running and it helped but the noise is still there.

I'm going today to get a new belt see if that helps, could it be the PS pulley. Also what belt is everyone using for a non A/C w/ PS setup. Maybe I got one that is just a little too long when it's hot....

Cliffs: Was not PS pump, only notice it when motor is warm and GP grease on the belt lessened noise.
