Got a problem with ignition or timing

I checked my timing today, and wow was it off. I set it so the timing light, with the T and E1 connected say 10 on the crank wheel.

Now I get the idle and vacuum I want. But under WOT at 12PSI the motor is loud, and exhaust is louder than before, and my EGT's climb faster than normal. But, performance sucks balls.

Before I could floor it, and damn the tires held on for life.

Now, it falls flat on it's face.

And the worn driveshaft bearings don't vibrate either. I lost a butt load of torque.

Sounds like a timing issue to me, but it's dead on, and I do not miss during acceleration. During decel in high RPMs, it backfires now, and it didn't used to do that.

Any thoughts?

sounds like you're still out of time somehow, when you jumped the connectors out, did you look to see if the CEL was flashing?

I know (at least on mk2s) if the TPS is crapped, or out of adjustment, the CEL won't flash and the spark advance won't disable leading you to believe your timing is way fuxored.

Hey ,

this might be a dumb ? but why do you have to connect T and E1 when timming the car???

My car idles very poorly and it was like it couldnt breathe........So a remmoved my K&N filter and it helped........WEIRD:-(

and the car also pulls like crap.....hmmm
have change plucks, wires, afm and cps........any ideas?

thanks

jumping out the connectors disables the electronic spark advance to give you correct timing... if you didnt jump it out, or your TPS (throttle positioning sensor) is bad, it'll show your timing to be 10-15 degrees advanced

and when you try to retard it back to 10*BTDC -actual- timing will be around 0BTDC making the car run like poo

I come from a land down under
Harmonic balancer ie: front pully

To confirm the timing mark pull #1 plug grab a piece of vacc hose about 8" long and drop it in the hole onto the top of the piston.

Turn the crank and watch it rise and when it stops just before going back down look at the timing mark it should be at 0.

OKay, I can't tell because the piston is TDC, and the crank pulley is at 0.

It seems to be fine.

It ran best though, when it was set to my best guess, 30 degrees BTDC!!!

Ahem.... if you turn the wheel inside the CPS 180 degrees, and install it that way, the motor will crank, run, boost, and run a 13.7@107.

I couldn't believe it ran that way since I had the car. I seriously couldn't believe it.

I put it back in, and now it idles right.............. what, the hell...
