Sorry if its in the wrong section, but just wondering what were some good and smart questions to ask the seller when buying a car that has been modified?

Buying a modified car is a totally different experience than any other car.

I make my judgement based off of a few factors:
  • car cleanliness
  • what the owner is like (if he's a total douche or a numbskull, it's usually a walk-away type situation)
  • how the mods were performed (i.e. zip ties holding things down, or brackets. How the general work was performed. If one thing is hacked, more will uncover itself later)
  • leaks, smells, etc.

Then there's money, if it's cheap, and a bit hacky, but you know you are going to rebuild it, go for it.
But if you don't like that it's pieced together with 3 different colors of vacuum hoses and wrong hose clamps (2" clamps on heater hoses with big tails hanging off is a BIG pet peeve... if they're too cheap and/or lazy to buy a hose clamp, I worry)

Laziness is a pet peeve of mine when it comes to building a car.

if the installed the after-market parts themselves, or had it installed
if they have receipts for any after-market parts
if the car was a project, or a daily driver

also, to add to the previous post, if they are lazy, then its likely they cut corners, and you can only cut so many corners before it becomes round

Try to get them talking about their car, especially if they did the mods themselves. Usually they get proud of their work they will start telling you about everything they did. Be enthusiastic of their tales and proceed to ask stupid questions to gauge wether or not they knew what they were doing.

9k for what a 1jz and mods? Unless the car is in great condition id only pay like 5-6. There are some nice parts and then some cheap parts. Who did the swap?
