Good place for a starter

Everyone in my town sucks. Autozone sells one but I think it's crap. Does anyone know of anywhere I can get a Toyota or other good starter for a decent price?

Also if anyone knows how to tell the difference between a bad starter and a bad ignition, please tell me. I roll the key over and the clock fades out and no start. That would be a lifesaver.

ummm sounds like a battery issue.........
To test the starter just hook it up to a battery charger..... ground it out with the negative at one of the bolt holes and hit the possitive where the wire connects, it'll spin if its good.

I got a couple extras, I wouldn't think that starters would go out all the time, I figure if you replace it even w/ a crappy advance/AutoZone one it should last a long time. Even if it does, get the Advance lifetime warranty one, it's not like they're super hard to change. :icon_bigg

is the alternator actually charging the battery though? you could have just been running off the battery, hence draining it, due to a bad alternator... just another thought...

Oh...... the mkIII I just bought I had to.... ummm... "rock" the key back and forth for it to start, but I don't know if the clock flashed.... Just had to bump it from off to start a few times and it would turn over, I can't really give you a diagnosis, but it may be something to try....

Is there some sort of ground off that could make it do this? Security related? Just throwing some more stuff out for you to check into.....

Every once in a while when I turn the key to start mine, everything dies out or the starter just clicks. When it does this I clean the battery terminals and connections and it works fine. For some reason I get corrosion between the connections (and just there) and have had this problem with every Toyota I have had. Just clean all the connections including where the line connects to the terminal from the starter. Hope this is all it is.

I did this about 9:30 at night just after picking it up w/ a dead battery and the problem of "it wont even turn over...." So I just figured it had as good a chance to be the battery as it did the starter........ But like I said, I'm just throwing things out..... and apparently I'm going to switch starters now.... :icon_razz

Thanks a lot for the help guys. Looks like it's the starter. Toyota or generic? What's your preference.

Generic, sure the Toyota one is better, but good enough for the cost difference? I seriously doubt it...... whats the price on a new Toyota starter anyway?
