getting rid of cat

I was thinking of taking off my cat and just putting a straight pipe in the place. Would the power gain be significant. Has anyone does this, and if so was it a good idea?

Well if you replace the entire system with a 3" straight through exhaust, you'll notice a whole lot of power.

I have seen 40hp increase after a 3" downpipe and exhaust installed on a mk3.
