Getting new spark plugs...HELP!! iridium? bosh platinum? I need help on all of this

Hi, 1986.5 supra, 7mge, and i'm doing a tune up and need to know what sparkplugs to get....and then how i should go about dissasembling/getting to the old ones to replace them.

I went to parts america (because they are affilated with one of my local shops) and came up with these...

BUT i dont know which one to get, i've heard NGK but those bosh multi-tipped ones look good, but i dont know anything about how those compare to a conventional gappable sparkplug.

And i dont know how much it's going to help to get the iridium ones.... how much better are they, and will i notice a difference?

my car has been running a bit jerky lately during accel and decel and i'm hoping it's a bad plug.... i changed my distributor cap and rotor and the old ones were unbelieveably corroded so i'm hoping the plug underneath the EFI is my problem because the cap and rotor are MUCH eaiser to change than the plugs....:nono:

also...can anyone give me first-hand experiance with the process of doing this? I can think of multiple ways to get to my plugs but not sure which is best. thanks!!:biglaugh:

Most folks seem to stick with the stock platinum spec NGKs, just because changing them is such a PITA and these have quite the service life.

Changing them is a real PITA. You'll need to pull most of the stuff off the top of the engine, including the Y pipe for the intake to get access to the plugs.

The ngk plug has been around for, well...., all of my life. But when I think platinum plugs for a car I think bosch platinums. I don't think you can go wrong with either. Don't just trust any platinum plugs. I have seen some bad bosch's and ngk's as well. You'll need a spark plug socket and you will want a pretty sizable extension I would probably get a 6inch, you could get by with a 4 but for the extra buck the 2 inches will be more handy in the long run. Alot of patience. Take your time and remember what you took off and what it connected to. MY main word of advice would be to start early in the am on a saturday and don't stop till she's done and don't take too many breaks because you will forget this shit quick and easy. If you think about aaaah f uck it i'll finish this tomorrow....., it takes twice as long to get back into the swing of what WAS going on. mike

I run ngk coppers no problems, ive ran denso coppers no problem.I was told to stay away from the bosches as they probly wouldnt last as long and performance would be lacking

I had bosches in my 88 N/A and hated them. Get NGK iridiums.

I would HIGHLY suggest you listen to GRIMJACK. Doing plugs on an NA isn't as easy as doing them on the turbo model cars. The NA's have the Y pipe that would need a gasket change everytime you remove it.

I would spend the money and pick up the stock NGK plus listed in your owners manual. Also a gasket for that Y tube as well.

You dont have to remove the Y pipe, Just remove the thottle body and youll have plenty of space. You wont need a gasket either since the throttle body to Y pipe has a reusable gasket. I included a pic so you could see where the Y pipe ends.

What about the old school..., Champion spark plug???? ANd I have never had any problem whatsoever with the bosch platinums. Damn, that's an engine. But this is my 1st Supra, I'll try anything once. SO!!!!!!!! Let's all get decided upon wich Spark Plugs we are going to use.

hmm...ok, thanks.... i'll go with NGK plugs, but what about iridium? are they much better? if not then i'd rather save a few bucks and get the platinum...

so i guess whatever fits that is NGK is good eh? does the different tip change anything...because i notice some spark plugs have cylindrical spark tips and others have pointed ones....

sorry if i seem to be picky.. it's just with the whole thing about taking lots of stuff of...if i do something i like doing it perfect.

The obvious answer is the more you pay the better the companies plugs get. The various elements (Platinum, Iridium) have different properties in electrical capacities. Some flow electricity (spark) with less resistance then others. Unless you have a higher HP engine the high grade plugs arent neccessary. Youll be fine getting any style of plug. just make sure that the gap is within spec and you'll never notice a difference.

Well All The Cars I Hav Put The Bosch Plat 4, They Ran Really Really Shiity!!!!!! Just To Let U Kno, And Ive Tried Them In 3 Cars, 2000 Ford Focus, 91 240sx, Paseo 93

The bosch platinum 4's use that stupid X gap thing. I have no idea why it affects the performance but it does. the +1's worked fine in my car. Its best to run a plug that resembles what the plug intended by the designers looks like. IMO.
