Hey guys, I just bought a mk3 that’s a good drive away from me. It is in Boston, I’m down in Maryland. I’m going up to get it at the end of the month, I was just wondering what the standard practice is for driving an out of state car back with no plates? I can’t get temp tags until I re-title it, which requires us to notarize stuff and all that, so unless I want to make 2 trips, which I don't, I'm not sure what to d.

What can I do? Tape the title in the rear window? Take the tags off of my other car and use those? I did this before with no tags and no problem with an Mr2, but that was driving from TN to NC, and I didn’t see a cop the whole way. I’ll be right through the main drag to NYC this time, and I can’t imagine I’ll be so lucky.

Any advice would be excellent. Thanks! -Charlie

if you can get them to mail the title or something you can use your old plates as a 30 day tag, it's completely legal but I'm pretty sure you've gotta have it titled into your name first.

anybody else?

Yea just use the plates from another car. and do the speed limit, u will be fine. if you get pulled over show the cop the title and tell him that you are driving the vehical with tags from one of your other cars. and that you are bringing the car straight to your house and going to get tags for it ASAP. cops wont have a problem with this just tell the truth and you will be fine.

You don't need fake plates, or plates from another car. If you can have the seller type you up a buyers order that should be enough. using fake plates or plates that don't belong gives the cop a chance to run the plates and ask a whole bunch of other questions. Make sure you have insurance on the car before you start driving it. You wreck the thing you'll be in trouble. Remember, YOu don't need to have plates to have insurance.

Yes I would get insurance on the car first. Also a bill of sale from the owner and title should be sufficient enough. Oh and yes do the speed limit and drive safely. We wouldn't want you to kill the new supra and hurt yourself and ohters in the process. LATA!!

Thanks for all the input guys. I know I have to have insurance set up beforehand. Ha. I am going to have all the paperwork with me, and I guess take at least a rear plate from my current car. I have a feeling I’ll get pulled over every 5 minutes on the jersey turnpike if I’m plateless. :-D

I would go for having the seller mail the title to you befor you go to pick up the car. Then get insurance, plates, registration etc... so your driving legally. If you get stoped in NJ without a properly registered car they can impound it on you. Register it or tow it back home would be my 2 options.

Good luck

Wrong.. they can't impound a car that doesnot belong to their state. He is traveling through the state. As long as He has insurance on the car and has a bill of sales, the cop can't do anything. The bill of sales has the date of purchase, the Vin of the car, the Seller and buyer's information.

I just drove this car 700 miles with just the plastic Infiniti emblem as a plate. I still don't have the title for this car so DMV gave me this 20 day temp thing to drive on until I get a title from the dealer.

Depends on the state. But what I live in NC, and they will issue temporary tags if you have a faxed copy of the title signed over to you...

so he just faxed me the title and i got temp tags, easy as pie.

and thus begun my love of supras

The state of New York has a special temporary "in transit" tag available for exactly the circumstances you describe, similar to what Pioneer has on the back of his Q45. How they do it in Massachusetts or Maryland I do not know, every state is different. I would hope the seller would be willing to assist you a bit with that.

If the car isn't registered at all, a police officer is likely to impound it or at least detain you significantly. They would rightly suspect it to be stolen if it has a plate from another vehicle on it, especially when you return to your home state. A temporary tag serves the purpose of identifying the vehicle and its new owner until it can be registered properly and there should be some means of securing one either in Massachusetts or Maryland.
