getting keys made

I lost my '89 Supra door/hatch keys. I still have the ignition keys. Can I get keys from a dealer or do I have to change out the locks? How can I open the hatch without the key? Can I do it by crawling back into the hatch area and open from inside manually? Thanks for your help guys. Mark L

First, theres a hatch opener by the gas door opener next to the driver seat on the left side(<----that was a lot of prepositions lol). I have left my keys in the car one time. Went to the dealer and asked if i can get another key made of the vin but they said that my car, an 89 na, wasnt in the system anymore. Of course i had a spare at home. Im not sure if there is another way of getting a new key cut.

Passenger side door lock cylinder has a code on there. Your local dealer should be able to use that code to cut you a new key.

I have a little metal tag with my car files that has a key code on it. The dealer was able to make me a new key from that. But, it seems like something that could easily be lost.

Also, to open the hatch from the inside you will need to have the plastics removed. I'm not sure if this is possible to do without breaking anything if you are doing it from the inside. Also, it does not sound very fun.

.

Also, Toyota can make just about any key based on your VIN. When I worked at a 'yoda dealer, I had keys cut for a few cars older than any mkiii supra. 84 land cruiser, 85 celica, 86 corolla, etc. Mechanics kept losing the damn keys...

Though to have any key made by VIN# you normally need to bring in proof of insurance, drivers license and registration in your name. No making keys for cars you don't own. ;)

Sounds like his ignition or door locks were replaced at some point if he has two seperate keys for the doors and ignition. They should all use the same key.

Since it's the door locks key you need, you're in luck, because (as BorHor stated) the car's key code is stamped on the passenger side lock cylinder. The door panel must be removed, then remove the lock cylinder, take it to the dealer and they will use the code to cut you a new key.

How are you getting into your car right now? Just leaving it open? Just wondering, and I'm also curious why you can't use your hatch release, cable snapped or something?

Edit, if you have different keys for the door locks/hatch and the ignition, then you should probably go right ahead and buy a lock set from a partout. I hear the pre-89's share a lot of key patterns. Get a set from a newer car in case people try to open you door with their keys (not sure what year your car is).

You'll have a new set with the same key and what's even better is you have the opportunity to do the lock cylinder rebuild before you put them in. Use the key you get with the set and make at least two spares. One at home and one for the road (wallet, or under the car or something --hidden well).

And just in case....this time write down the lock cylinder code and place it with you supra files if you have a place for that sort of thing, or just somewhere safe where you'll remember you put it.

Thanks for the reminder, need to get some more spares cut ;)

Off to school, good luck.

A few years back Toyota erased the VIN information for older cars. So for most MK3 owners we are out of luck for getting key's cut that way.

First of all thank you all for your time and info on this. Thank God for boards, it really shows a person how stupid one can be. AKITO, you really hit it on the head and I feel so damn stupid, DOH I haven't used the Supra in so long that I completely forgot about the hatch release. I had hoped to save face by finding that the release didn't work but no such luck, it works fine, heh. Now to the keys. I received one ignition key only (or so I thought) with the car and I thought an additional round top key (the one that I lost). I had an extra igntion made for emergency and stuck it in my wallet. Also, the original door/ignition key is so worn and fits so sloppy that I wanted a better key made before the original wore too far to be duplicated. So here is the story (and I'm sticking with it). The Supra sat in my shop without needing to be locked for almost 2 years prior to the move (blown head gasket). When I loaded the Supra for shipping I didn't dig out the original key but took out the extra from my wallet. The copy works the ignition fine but it turns out it won't work the door locks or the hatch lock, must not have tried it after it was made. It was probably just off a little due to the wear on the original. When I tried it during the loading I just figured it required 2 different keys like most domestics that I'm more used to. I do have the original, although quite worn but it does work the doors and the hatch. Wished you could see the humble/stupid look on my face right now, huh, maybe not, it ain't pretty. Thank you all for your help and sorry for the needless post. (Hey, and don't tell my wife, I give her enough ammo as it is). Mark L
