mine is the same way...i just kinda deal with it though...i figured its either always been this way or its just old and thats how it works now....i would however like to hear a proper answer as well.
That rod is not the proper way to adjust for throttle cable stretch.
First check the Nylon washers to make sure they are still there. If they have worn out or disintegrated and disappeared completely then the assembly can be loose enough to cause significant accelerator pedal play, or even worse cause the throttle to stick in an open position. If such a case exists the the link assembly needs to be replaced. If the link assembly checks out, adjustment to cable stretch should be made where the cable meets the the link assembly. You adjust the two nuts to move the cable set point.
Sorry about the picture not showing the cables and nuts specifically, it was the best one I could find on my computer ATM.
mine is the same thing, except i know what my problem is.
check under your kick panel, when moving it, it may move left and right, theres a pin there you can try replacing that if it is that problem.
its sorta obvious....i was playing with those and all it did was make my car idle crazy high cause the return spring doesnt pull it back properly....also it looks like my nylon washers have dissapeared on mine as well....
