fuel surge tank...why?

I purchased my first supra about a a month ago, and have since been attempting to familiarize myself with the car.

First thing I noticed when I originally opened up the hood and actually inspected the engine is this...box....with no idea what it was...and after a bit of searching I found out that it was a Greddy fuel surge tank (ooohh, name brand too lol)

After finding out what a fuel surge tank was, I am now stumped as to why the heck the previous owner decided to waste money on a fuel surge tank when the car was...well, almost completely stock...to my knowledge. It is N/A btw.

anyone have a good reason for this? haha

Also, in an attempt to familiarize myself with the car, if anyone could give me a quick rundown of how a fuel surge tank is setup in a fuel system that would be immensely helpful, so that I know what I'm dealing with if I need to work on the fuel system.

thats why I said i feel like an idiot haha

first time I looked at it, my mind thought "fuel lines" for some reason and I never gave it a second thought haha

but now i have a real question, why have a catch can? I thought the PCV was supposed to get rid of those sorts of things from the crankcase, or do our cars even have pcv's?

Our cars have a PCV system but no PCV Valve as such, it's just an orifice into the TB, if an engine is worn it'll get blowby and smoke, often a catch can is added to reduce the smoke.

Don't stress it's NOT the stupidest thing I've seen posted here by a long shot ;)

They dont have pcv valves. Every car has a pcv system tho. 1/2jz have pcv valves

Its there to stop oil from going into the intake.

Some people get nit picky about oil in the intake, some use one to stop smoke from excessive blow by, others for the bling factor.

It is hooked up right tho. Tho it would do a better job on the cold side.

Edit: double beat.

An oil catch can like that will keep oil droplets from reaching the intake under extreme running conditions.
High rpm, and high boost will produce more atomised oil being passed through the some what limited oil traps on the inside of the cam covers.
Giving the blow-by an additional chamber to expand into, before it goes back into the normal PVC system will allow more of the oil to seperate out from the stream, and not be ingested into the intake.

Oh, really ?
Just because it doesn't have a turbo ?

Hey, I know, and I didn't put it on there, and I really don't care what it was on.
Just saying what they were meant for.
But your right, it's not a turbo.
Points for you !
(I'm not counting, but I guess you are)

Settle down no need to get all butthurt I was joking (guess you missed the smilie), 95 times out of 100 if an NA has a CC it's breathing heavy and on it's last legs....

The other 5 are ricers that think they look "cool" but have 0 understanding of why you'd fit one and are usually plumbed in braided hose and fittings worth more than the can.

Well, as far as I can tell, unless the HG is going bad and I just don't know it (dunno if its been replaced), this car still has plenty of life in it.
No smoking at all-burns very little oil as far as i can tell, but whether its burning coolant or not is still to be determined, I need to do a coolant test.
got my fingers crossed lol

You'd smell it if it were burning coolant it's very distinctive and something a 7M owner can eventually smell from 1000 paces :D
