Fuel pump problems common...?

Ok, so I fell in love with MKIII's a little while back and am set on getting one, it's just finding the right one. Today I went and looked at an '87 turbo with new paint, 18" rims, new brakes, boost controller, ic pipes, hks ssqv, and some other goodies.

The problem with it is the dude said one day after it rained (don't think that has anything to do with it..) the car wouldn't start. It cranks and spins but won't fire. He also said he doesn't hear a whine from the fuel pump with ignition on. Now, I know very well that a Walbro is only $100, but does this sound correct? Could it be the relay? The guy is asking $2,450. If worse comes to worse, can I just find a 7M/1JZ and have someone swap it and keep everything under $6,000?

I tried calling Boost Logic to see if they would do it but they're closed for the night.

Would it make sense to rent a trailer and take it to a mechanic and have them look at it? The battery was dead so I couldn't see what he was talking about but I will go more into depth with it if necessary.

Thanks

Bring some jumper cables and try startin it. Tell us if it even tries to crank over.

People will lie... I was told my car just needed a tuneup (it did, but...) but the real reason is ran like shit was it had a BHG. The guy said it had a small coolant leak, and I guess I figured out where it is.. :)

Yeah, I probably will if necessary.

What do you think about swapping in a new(er) 7m? Or about towing it to a mechanic?

I'm thinking it might have a BHG. The guy ran 10 psi on it with the stock head gasket.

10 psi on the stock HG? eek. As in the one that came from the factory? or a new OEM one?

Did you look at the oil?

Yeah, from the factory. I think I'm at the point where I just want to get it to run so I can take it to Boost Logic and get it completely rebuilt with forged goodies or swap in a new motor.

But yeah, I should take a look. Because my last car leaked a tremendous amount of oil I ducked under the car and didn't see any spots. But I'll definitely check the level if I get the chance, same with the coolant to see any preliminary signs of a BHG.
