front oil seal question

Hi everyone, I finally tracked down where my oil film is coming from, and I believe it to be the front crank seal; however I wanted to confirm before to go to repair it.

There is oil on the bottom of the lower timing cover, oil pan, surrounding block, oil cooler lines and undercover. However, despite how it looks its not that much actually leaking, in 1500 miles I put in maybe 1/2qt and its on "F". There is no oil on the timing belt or crank pulley itself, which is strange, but other then that front crank seal IDK what it could be.

Now, the seal should be behind the crank pulley, timing cover, and timing gear correct? There are no other covers or anything in the way?

Here is the seal listed in the EPC

Thanks!

its not hard to get at. youll need and impact gun to get the crank pulley bolt loose. or you can use a breaker bar wedged against the car. pull the efi fuse and click over the start real quick. thatll break it free.

It could be a small leak from the front main. The oil loss could be a combination of small leaks or possibly you're burning a tiny amount.

^ its not impossible that I'm burning oil, however by the way everything in/on my motor looks incuding my turbo/IC pipes I would say its unlikely its something I could even notice. But 2 long trips with 4.30's in mid summer heat I think has made my leak get progressively worse. (before it was something so small I didn't even bother looking)

I need a gear puller for the timing gear though right? The crank pulley is NP, I used the starter when I did my timing belt like 5k miles ago.

Not usually. It comes off easily on most cars, but a few of them are tight and need a steering wheel puller (the type with bolts that thread into the gear). The 7M timing gear has two threaded holes for this purpose.

Just to warn you.. my crank pulley was a pain to get off, my timing gear was even worse. I destroyed the timing gear getting it of. I also managed to pull the threads out from the crank pulley with the steering wheel puller. fortunately I got another one very quickly (thanks TONY!).
