front axle horror

hey guys, i am having a problem with my axle....the rubber part that protects the shaft from bottoming out on the passenger side is all busted and torn up. Therefore I am trying to figure out if i have to buy a whole new shaft or can i just replace the rubber piece??? here is a pic:

Wait our cars have front axles? I have no idea what im looking at.. Would that be the steering rack?

That's what I said. Better picture needed.

If that is the power steering rack you could just re-boot it, but if it's leaking fluid you have a bad rack seal, which means either rebuild the rack or buy a new one (expensive either way.) Keep in mind I am ASSUMING this IS the p/s rack we're looking at here.

you are probably talking about the steering rack bushing....they should be pretty cheap from toyota (no, you don't need a new rack)

well from what i can see, thats the power steering rack. and there is no bushing...

you should be able to find just the bushings at an auto parts store. if not, hit up toyota.

yep thats a PS rack. get the bushing at toyota.


replace both.

I appreciate the advice! I am sure some of you got a good chuckle out of my lack of knowledge. The worst part about it is that I have a car that the motor is out of and you can clearly see the rack.
