I'm sure the answer is yes but just had the tranny rebuilt and was wondering if starting with synthetic(Redline MT-90) is ok? I'm sure it's not like a engine but want to be sure... It's a little late in the game for a royal f*** up:)

I did mine and Redlined MT90 is the best for our gearboxes. Why, JDub explained it on a thread and that's enough.

On a fresh rebuild?? I'll have to look up that article, or if you can point me in the right direction that would be awesome.

It is simple. On a fresh rebuild, you want all the parts to rub against each other to wear in properly.

It is not recommended to use synthetic on a new engine build and it is the same for a gearbox.

You don't want all the extra additives because it hampers the break-in process. Redline MT-90 meets the standards for manual gearboxes.

Normal cheap gear oil as you'll be replacing it very soon. The important part is to heat cycle and wear both sides of the gears (just like breaking in a diff).

Though, this depends a hell of a lot on what was actually done on the rebuild. If none of the gears were replaced, there's nothing to wear in...

Good call, it will be changed after a short while. The gears were apparently good and reused, as were the shafts. I bought the DM rebuild kit, so new bearings, seals and synchroes. Also used MC front bearing retainer and 1st-2nd gear shift fork. Thanks for the advice guys, after a few thousand kms of dino oil I'll switch to MT-90.
