I picked up a 86.5 today and cant get it started. i did the Fuel pump jumper test and the paperclip damn near burned my finger off. Think the fuel pump is dead? I hear a whirring but its coming from under the hood.

The fuel pump should not pull enough amps to heat a paperclip. I'd say you have a short, or a bad pump.

Try to track down that sound under the hood. You can sometimes hear the fuel flowing through the rail, but a "whirring"? That seems odd as well.

Are you certain somone hasn't added some cheapo universal inline pump somwhere?

the only thing that will cause that paperclip to get hot is not enough resistance. your wiring is jacked.

it could be the pump

you need to check the ohms on the pump and the wiring and see if it is in spec.

i will say this,. denso makes a really good pump and they rarely fail.

walbro is another story

I have NOOOO idea what you guys are smoking.. but a paperclip WILL get hot if you jumper it in the diagnostic block. Of course it depends upon what size of paper clip you use. I use a small one so it fits easily into the jumper cavity. it also depends on how long you leave it in there.

There shoudl be whirring in the tank.. and you should hear fuel flowing thru the lines. Pretty easy to hear. You can grab the ruber return line and you'll feel the fuel flowing thru it.

I would say you've got other problems aside from the fuel pump.

yeah, when i tested my fuel pump, i had the exact same experience as al just posted. paperclip got hot, (heard the wallypump like crazy!) and heard/felt the fuel flowing.

The shorter and thicker the paper clip, the less it will heat up. Even on my dead stock fuel system, a wimpy paper clip will get pretty hot. A thicker one won't. The whirring under the hood is the pressure regulator oscillating and is normal.

Yea, I guess that's probably it - I've only used a paperclip once or twice and they have been very large ones - generally I use a purpose made jumper wire that I keep in my tools.
