I dropped off all my dash pieces to be professionally dyed (not just spray bombed) I was just wondering how many people spray bombed their dash or other interior pieces. After doing research there is a special prep process that needs to be done. It is a cleaning agent that penetrates into the plastic or vinyl and when heated up it bring all oils from armor all and other grit/oild it may contain. The problem with just cleaning down the dash and other pieces with acetone or degreaser is that it clean the surface, but when that piece is expelled to heat it pushes more oils back to the surface causing the paint to flake or chip. By pushing all the oils to the top with this special procedure it gets rid off all oils and contaminants avoiding any complications. Also they are mixing a special dye that will penetrate in to he pieces and not just coat the top. This way I'll be able to use dash cleaners etc. without having to worry about stripping the dye.

I just thought I'd share this with you guys and warn any of those planning on doing it in the future. Good Luck

I'll do that. If I have time I'm going to stop by the shop and take progress pics and different stages that they have to go though to get a quality product.

Car is being painted '06 Lexus Crystal White, but currently Super White II. Interior is is currently burgandy, but I have replace the carpet with a Dark Graphite and all the interior pieces are being dyed a charcoal color (just a few shades off black) the A-pillars and rear 1/4 pieces around the window will be a warm gray to match the warm grey suede headliner. The seats are being reupholstered to a Blood Red and I have custom CF seat backs that I'm fabricating, along with other misc pieces (cant tell ya yet :biglaugh:)

I took my plastic pieces along with dash pad and door panels down to a local autobody shop to get dyed. He told me about the special process and I know I didn't want to fuck something up, so I got him to do it. Any autobody shop should be able to do it, just ask them. It'll save time and stress later on. As far as price...I have no idea, It is kind of a time spend thing plus supplies. I'll find out next week and post pics for you guys.

I've only done the dash and center console, but it did not take long and I already had it out... basically about $30 in paint, adhesion promoter, etc... I still have about 4 cans left over.

Took about an hour to do the dash completely, re-coating every 10 minutes or so.

I'd be interested in knowing the cost. Mine looks really good and am very happy with the results. I like doing my own stuff tho... I wonder if the costs/quality makes it a worthwhile pursuit, if the bodyshop does something differently... definitely want to see them pics!

Looks like we're sharing some of the same changes/mods/projects recently....

Yeah, I see quite a few people here doing interior changes. I'm doing all the work on the car myself inc. the CF seat backs and other pieces, cutom brushed alum. trim, and other small detail things that will catch your eay. I just didn't want to have to go back and repaint incase something happened to the paint on the dash in a year or so. The body shop is actually dying the dash and gettig al the contaminants and oils out of the plastic and vinyl. Where as when you clean down the surface it is still leaving oils inside the part that will expell eventually. When you use an adheasion promoter, it is just preping the surface so the paint will stick. Instead the body shop will have it done properly and the parts will be penetrated with a dye, meaning I should be able to scub acetone on it an still not see the burgandy underneath..

I'll defenitly post pics. I seems like this could save people time in the end..possibly not money. Painting is much cheaper, but like anything in this hobby...You get what you pay for.

GL with your project Satan. I want to see you post some pics to.

How much is it going to cost to have the whole interior dyed? Is it a specific interior shop?
I'm looking to change to black when I put the interior back in, but I'm not sure if I should attempt it myself or not...
