I have one. You can have a shorter antenna, but you still need one of some description. It does not work to make the diversity antenna even remotely useful as a replacement to get rid of a mast. I tried a few things, and it was a no go. A signal amp still has to have an antenna receiving a signal. I use one with an aftermarket antenna until I get off my lazy butt and get a genuine one again, and for that it works well. Extended my ability to pick up signals perhaps 30-40km beyond what it was without it.

look behind your stereo, you will see two radio looking plugs (metal ended ones)... The non FM sized one is for the AM antenna (in the hatch glass)... All you need is an adapter designed change a GM style radio plug to a standard aftermarket sized plug and it works like a charm. I don't have the mast anymore (getting it shaved), and my radio reception with an FM booster/amplifier actually is pretty good. I listen to satellite radio anyway, and I am currently removing my interior and whats left of my stereo (4 speakers in the factory spots) so it doesn't matter to me anymore.

Where is the hatch antenna? Inside of the glass??

As for all you guys wanting to get rid of your big arse antenna, what wrong with you guys!! Retractable antenna are so 1980's and so are pop-lights, sheesh they're some of the coolest things.
See the douchebag driving his new M3, i bet he doesn't have a retractable antenna...

(yes that was an unfair analysis of M3 drivers)

You said you use satellite. and a FM booster/amp, is this necessary if using the glass antenna? Or can I just use an adapter to plug the glass ant. into my aftermarket FM radio ant. receiver?

I have a booster. i might unplug the antenna on the way to school and see how the reception is. (my dash is out and i have no radio brackets...stereo slides out :p ) but like posted before it probably won't work.

my antenna is noisy as all get out as well! any tips to lube it up properly? it pops like crazy and the motor is a bit noisy too.

anyway... the hatch glass antenna, would that be the same as the defroster lines?

It's built into the hatch glass, looks like some extra defroster lines near the bottom of the glass. FM reception is fine on my car, and I've been running it that way for at least 3 years. Without any kind of booster, I might add. You do need the adapter mentioned above, I picked mine up at a auto stereo shop for a couple bucks.

As I recall, it's not an AM antenna, the stock head unit just pulled it's signal from whichever antenna was giving better reception, but don't quote me on that, I don't feel like looking it up!

yeah i have a booster but i just realized it's not even powered right now so no effect and i get perfect reception of the nice stations. in fact it amp's the hiss so i might ditch it all together. :p

i always thought that section my defroster setup was broken, but its an antenna, hah! and i always wondered what the hell that other plug was for, now i know thanks!
