They do break, or crack, and usually make a clicking sound in the beginning. I've seen several. I believe its due to an imbalance in the torque converter.
You can pull the trans easy enough, have a new plate lined up (but not purchased yet, unless you can return it if not used), and inspect the plate.
I have also seen torque converters with problems that were first thought to be the plate.

I come from a land down under
In the old days I had this happen on my BBChev/Turbo400 so I got 2 flexplates machined the ring gear off one and bolted them both on, end of problem!

Also did this to make a Flywheel for my old Toyota V8 by bolting a 1/2" thick plate onto a pair.

Driving on the freeway i get on it making a lane change, and then i hear this god owful sound like a screwdriver being held on a gear, so i get off the throttle, pull over, car running, and pop the hood, the sound is coming from the back of the engine, i thought i may have dropped a cam, but then the engine would run rough, i was idling silky smooth, the i popped the throttle, the sound stopped, oil pressure ok, all ok, car still drove and shifted like it did, had all gears so i limped home. once home i shut it down and when i restarted i hear the clunk from the middle of the car, so i know the flex plate is broken, but i believe there is something up with my torque converter for that to happen, now a week ago a friend conviced me to put this "fluid conditioner" in the tranny to help clean it and i am thinking it cleaned it dislodged some build up, and somehow imbalanced my T/C and broke my plate.

WOW, apparently, they are somewhere around $600.00!!!!!
I'd just pick your desired stall RPM and go aftermarket. To replace it, you'll need to drop the tranny, and remove the six bolts that hold it to the flex plate. Not too hard, just two simple steps. ;)

I just got off the phone with Reactor Products they make aftermarket flexplates, they need the old one to make an aluminum "better" flexplate but he wouldn't quote me a price, also the website does not show Toyota flexplates but the guy on the phone said the have made several in the past and they are approved race flexplates.

Actually, that's the factory price for a TC.. flex plate should be under $200 ($161 or so)
I'm sure that one of the auto/man swap guys has an extra flex plate laying around though.
