I bought an engine a few months ago that had sat for a while(over a year). I replaced the headgasket and cleaned it up a bit.

Sometime this week I plan to finish installing everything and firing it up.
Before I do so I plan to flush the radiator out, and flush all the water jackets/cooling passages with distilled water to get rid of any junk.
Then I will drain the oil and replace the filter, then turn the engine several times by hand to circulate the oil, then drain it to get rid of as much junk as I can.
THEn I will put in some cheap oil and run it for 30 or so miles then change it AGAIN.

Finally I will refill it with oil and a new filter and change the oil in 1,000 miles and call it good.

Other thanthis, what else can I do to make sure the engine is okay to start up and run, considering it has sat for a long time?

Your supposed to use some cheap conventional oil, synthetic or synthetic blend wont allow the engine to fully break in, but since its already broken in you dont have to. But if I were you I would go with Castrol GTX or something similar for the those first few oil changes, then move to sythetic blend then full sythetic.

Just pull the EFI fuse so it wont start and crack it over a couple of times to get some oil moving. Thats what i did when i did my HG and let it sit for a month.

The only reason why I'm using the cheap oil the first time is because it will only be in the engine for a day, or the time it takes for me to fill it up, turn the crankshaft, and drain it...

I will eventually use full synthetic.

Before i started mine up, i poped off the valve covers and lubricated the cams. The oil will seep down into your engine. You dont want any realy metal on metal contact upon first start up.

Also, i pulled my EFI fuse and cranked it over a few times. Just remeber to put it back in. I didnt and we wondered why the car wasnt starting ;)

Key in on position to listen for fuel pressure, remove EFI fuse, crank to get everything moving, put EFI fuse back in, fire that bitch up. Make sure you prime the turbo too...
