Hey guys, here is one for you. Im helping my friend rebuild his 7M. I can not for the life of me get the front bolt out of the crankshaft. We have broken two rachets, Tried a braker bar with a 4 foot piece of pipe. Nothing. We sprayed PB on it and still nothing.:3d_frown:

Use a half inch drive socket on the biggest ratchet you have. Now slip the end of the ratchet into a long 3 ft steel pipe, Now, position it so the wratchet and breaker bar are under the car with the pipe pointing towards the drivers tire resting on the ground, Then bump the starter with the key. The starter should break the bolt loose. Be carefull and double check my positioning as i havent had any coffee yet.. That is how I did it... :)

You will need help to tighten it back up again.. In gear, with someone standing on the brakes...180++ ft pounds

the only problem is the engine is out of the car. We got it all striped down except for that bolt. We tried the 1/2" socket and 4 foot bar and nothing

Ohh your screwed...LOL Just Kidding..:) .All i can think of is trying to get the flywheel from turning somehow, and a bigger breaker bar... Or take it to a shop that can pop it off with a 3/4 inch air gun for you. I am sure someone else will have a suggestion for you soon..

Most air guns are 1/2" drive and don't have enough balls to get them loose. IMO 180-190 ft pounds is just to tight for them.. :(

Try a 3/4" high torque air impact wrench or if you can get your hands on an electric one, that would work too. You could try to heat the bolt with a propane torch, but be careful the crank pulley has rubber in it and there's the crank seal right behind it. Good luck...these can be a royal PIA!

Sounds lame, but try smacking it with a hammer straight on a few times. It should help loosen it up, may want to spray some PB on there first, it can't hurt. I had to do that w/ mine, and then I was able to get it out.

any decent 1/2 inpact should have atleast 300ftlbs in reverse.

The key is to not hold the trigger on constantly. inpacts are only effect on the first hit. pull the trigger as if you were trying to unload the clip from a semi-auto hand gun.

Another thing that helps is to smack the bolt head with a drift and hammer as if you were trying to push it into the crank a couple of time. This will help to slightly unbind the binding of the threads between the bolt and the crank that was created from the torque during the installation of the bolt.

I guess I agree, I should have said most air tanks don't have the balls to run the 1/2 drives, or the bigger ones..I have never tried an electric one tho...

This is easy. :) There are two methods for this.

1. Bolt a chain onto the flywheel and bolt the chain onto the engine stand. Big breaker bar, + 3 foot of pipe on the front, and off she'll come.

or

2. Pull the oilpan and put a couple chunks of steel in between the crankshaft coutnerweights and the side of the block. Same deal with the breaker bar + 3 foot of pipe on the front.

yes, compressor size is a big key factor in it.

as for electrics, some of those are also just as good. I have a have a 1/2" drive dewalt electric impact that just picked up and I used it last week to remove the crank bolt form a lexus 1uz that I am building and its torqued the same as the 7M's. It made pretty easy work of the bolt also. Nothing like my 700ftlb 1/2" drive Ingersoll Rand Titanium 'N', but then again, it also has 1000ftlb maximum nut busting rating. That damn thing will brake your wrist if your not ready for it.

put a propane torch on the bolt for a few minutes - heat it up to break it free. Let it cool and give it another shot.

Get a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar and hit it on the end with a BFH
