This is a tough one. If you look purely at talent and age, its a no-brainer. Artest is a better overall player than Camby.
Its chemistry and craziness that make it tougher. As for chemistry, Artest is only a mediocre outside shooter who tends to jack it up too much. And as good as he is defensively, his strength is not where our biggest weakness lies -- in having decent size perimeter defenders who are good at running around screens and rotating out to jump shooters. He's decent at defending perimeter shooters but not great, especially after the league cracked down on any contact on the perimeter, negating his strength advantage. Clearly he's a big upgrade over anyone we have at defending the likes of Lebron, McGrady, Bryant, Ginobili, Wade etc.
That counts for a lot right there.
And it wouldn't shock me to see the league ease up a bit on the whistle blowing this season. They may want to take the officials out of the game a little (for obvious reaons) plus emulate the international game with its fewer stoppages.
I have the feeling that's where we are going -- a little more discretion to allow minor contact on the perimeter and when guys are trying to fight around screens.
I would lean toward doing the deal. There's a chance that playing alongside a legitimate alpha dog in Iverson would help keep him in line. Plus he only has two years left on his reasonable contract (the second a player option) so he's: 1) very tradeable, and 2) theoretically motivated to increase his value and get a good contract when this one is up (maybe even after this season when he can opt out). And maybe he's maturing a little and willing to keep it under control in order to win on a really good team, ala Rasheed Wallace. It does happen.
The opt out is a concern. If Artest plays really well this year, this could be a one year proposition.
And if we trade Camby, we really need to add another tall guy to balance out our team and cover certain matchups. I'd look to get Mikki Moore or Spencer Hawes back in addition to Artest. We won't get both Artest and Hawes for Camby, and Moore (who can't be traded for awhile) would require adding someone in to make it work under the cap.
Question -- would you trade Camby and Smith for Artest and Moore? I would.
