Fan Shroud / Fan Blade questions

As I was driving I downshifted and revved up the engine and it sounded like a garbage disposal or something, freaked me out! So I pop the hood and turned out my fan shroud was completely shredded! The result ended with a big chunk missing from the fan blade too, so this can't be good. I don' know how this happened. Oh well.

So Anyhow ...... my questions........

1. How critical is this fan shroud? I live in southern california and it's summer time so I'm guessing it's important!

2. If I fix the fan shroud and I'm only missing a chunk from 1 fan blade and the others are more or less OK how bad is that?

3. I'm thinking maybe this is an opportunity to go with an electric fan setup... What is the best electric fan setup?

Don't run it with a missing piece of blade the imbalance will kill the bearings in the waterpump and trash the Fan Clutch and we all know how fragile the 7M Cooling system is and what can follow if it lets go!

why not go with a nice electric fan setup? wouldnt this be a great time to do it?

believe it or not the stock cooling system will cool better then say a nice FAL fan setup. some have had success with them(mostly stock) others havent.
usually higher hp guys will swap back to stock fan instead of electric fans.
Noah89T will probably chime in later. I know him personally and he has the most CFM flowing FAL he could buy and his car's temp is a little higher then what it would normally be with stock fan....

btw he also has a aftermarket aluminum radiator too.

I have pushed 400 rwhp/rwtq with mine at 15 psi and I haven't had any trouble running with the FAL BM-150 universal. I also have the Fluidyne aluminum radiator and had zero cooling issues before I swapped over from the factory setup. Of course, it hasn't warmed up here for summer here fully yet either, so then I'll see if it is sufficient.

Shucks I was hoping to drive my car for a week or so and take it easy while I figured out what I was going to do and buy the right parts. So I guess it looks like I'll be driving the stupid honda for the next week :icon_frow

I think i'll just get the stock fan and shroud again.... i'd rather not get into the drama of a failing or underpowered electric fan, even if it's a small chance and some people have had success its just not something i guess is worth it.

Thanks for the info people :)

Pull the shroud and grab another fan one of the guy here will have one.

You can drive it like this until you can replace the shroud as long as you're not hammering it too much.

dam,i would not like to be around when that blade shatters. i've been working on a replacement aluminum shroud that fits in the stock location for awhile. I have the frame done,it's just a matter of replacing the stock dual fansforthe a/c

Just out of curiosity, the fan is designed to cool the radiator correct? not the engine block.... does it pull air from the engine onto the rad, or pull air from the rad to the engine?
