While I've never tried in this stock stereo. I wouldn't expect CD-R capability until 95-96. CD-R didn't become advertised in aftermarket car stereos till 97 or 98. Maybe you'll get lucky!! Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Edit: U.S. radio is from 87.5-107.9.

I think you'll find most older CD players WILL play CD-R's. At some point during the mid-90's CD players stopped playing them well, and that's when they started introducing "CD-R Capable" CD players... it's a conspiracy I tell you.

(Seriously, all late-80's, early 90's CD players I've seen will play CD-R's just fine -- including OEM Toyota).

Mine plays them fine too but for some reason I have to turn the volume all the way up to hear the CDplayers sound on the road, If I get on the high way you can forget about hearing it, just have to play the radio.

Had the same problem with my original Toyota CD player. The electrolytic caps dry up after 16+ years. Its a major amount of work to replace them since those old CD playes are a jumble of circuit boards and wires. Even after I replaced them my player skipped badly and I eventually tossed it.

Better off replacing the radio with a newer Toyota CD player and making an adapter to the connector. Toyota has changed the plug style for external amp radios a bunch of times, but the basic signals remain the same. I hooked up a 2000 Tundra CD/radio to my old amp and it works great.

Why bother just upgrade it to modern gear making sure you keep all the old crap in a box to refit if you're worried about keeping the car original.

For that matter mount some modern gear in a rack and slide it under the seat and use a remote to drive it leaving the old original crap in place ;)
