Factory 86.5 turbo?

Hey guys, recently bought a 86.5 Supra, my first Supra, really like it, just one question however,

Did the 86.5 come out factory 3l turbo?

From everything I've read, it didn't. However the badge on the back of mine says 3L Turbo and the engine is a factory 7m-gte. It has TEMS, electrics seats, cruise control etc etc (if that makes a difference) and I live in New Zealand.

Any ideas?

I believe Cyfi6 had a really early 7MGTE so its possible, just check the plates in the engine bay, and door jam.

Checked in the engine bay and the doors, couldn't find anything. The plates in the engine bay didn't have the year and it looked like there was a sticker missing on the drivers side door jam.

The car is probably a japanese import. I'm pretty sure the japanese got the GTE engine right from the beginning.

There is no chance his will say MA71, as there is no chassis code MA71. Since his car is obviously a Japan-spec car, and they did not use 17-character VIN's in Japan. It will simply say MA70-xxxxxxx.

That is correct. Japan had the 7M-GTE starting from the beginning. They never had the 7M-GE at all in fact. So any Japan-spec MA70 you ever see, will have started it's life with a 7M-GTE.

Hum, I have an 86.5 turbo not swapped (production date: DEC 86), and I've always heard they never had them.
The chassis code starts with MA70L-XXXXXX but the VIN does have MA71 in it and is 17 characters long.
EDIT: NM, that makes mine an 87....brain fart...

Already answered.

The Supra debuted in Jan of 1986, and the 7MGTE was not yet in production. At least I didn't think it was.

Dec of 86, is a 1987 model, not 86.5.

I will look around the web myself on when the 7MGTE came out. I hadn't read what Jeff is saying at Toyota. So now I am a little intrigued. How to sort the through the BS...

It's a MA70.

Alright well I'm gonna go with it being a Jap import, as that's where most of our cars come from. Just wasn't sure because like most people here said, they didn't think the 86.5 came out turbo.

Thanks for your help guys, will hopefully get some pics of it up when I get the engine rebuilt (bearings :()

Jeff

Okay, learned something new. Didn't know they didn't use the same VIN codes in Japan as we do. Thanks for the info.
