Exhaust Routing

As we all know, our cat-back runs from the passenger side, curves to the driver's side, then straightens out past the fuel tank and exits on the side of the fuel tank. Looking at the rear of my car with no cat-back, I wondered if the fuel tank could be moved to be more on the driver's side, and the exhaust be made to exit on the passenger side? This would make for even less bends! Anyone have any thoughts on this?

That would probably require some hole cutting in the hatch floor wouldn't it? And some kind of custom filler neck. Good idea tho' I'm sure someone on the board could do it. I wonder if anyone has done it before(either here or Japan)?

DM: If you leave the spare wheel well in place you'd lose most of the tank capacity doing this.

With a flat floor and a centre mounted tank it'd work! :)

I have no need for the spare tire, or need for the space for it - I need to learn to weld! LoL It would make alot of sense to make the exhaust straight back. I may consider trying this.
Hrmmm. I need to see if maybe I can fab something custom up. Twin in-tank pumps and custom door..? Just an idea, but maybe something worth thinking about. See, I'm always thinkin', and my pocketbook is getting smaller and smaller.

I come from a land down under
LOL the flat floor isn't real hard to do just remember to put some bracing under it to prevent "drumming" rolling a bead in the sheet metal before you weld it in will work or failing that tack weld some strips of metal across the unsupported area!

I did this on my Z and managed to fit a 120 litre tank in there with 20 litres partitioned off for Methanol.

has anyone ever done side exaust on a mkiii? like just have it exit right behind the front passenger tire? that would be very loud and illigal but oh so cool.

Don't worry about the bends. A crappy weld that protrudes on the inside of the pipe, will kill any benefit of any routing you can fathom. Concentrate on doing the job done properly, and even a relatively small exhaust will flow very well.

Unless you're really wanting a dual exhaust, but are afraid to ask straight out. :icon_wink

Forget a dual exhaust. Only way I'd even consider was if I had large twins running in parallel.

gas tank on the right of the car and exhaust on the left probably was made to balance out the weight...if your gonna do that I would get a fuel cell in the middle/rear of the car.
