Well today I was checkng my oil level whenI notice that I was missing my last three (In front of Cylinders 5 and 6)exhaust manifold bolts and studs where missing!!:aigo: WTF!! What problems can this cause? I am pretty sure there will be an exhaust leak, but I am wondering is this causing the slight tapping noise I hear sometimes? With just 3 bolts missing can the manifold move enough to cause a noise?

:biglaugh: That is hilarious that you are just hearing a little tapping noise because when 1 of my cars exhaust studs are down on torque I hear a loud tapping noise and you have 3 missing. You probably will have to helicoil the holes to fix the problem and replace the studs.

yes, you will have to remove the exhaust manifold, and helicoil those studs.

A previous owner probably went to put the manifold back on and they stripped out, they panicked, and just said "screw it"!

You should take a look at bigaaron's solution to this problem, I saw his replacement studs in person, and they looking awesome, that would be ideal, as you wouldn't have to worry about them ever coming out again, and even the helicoiled threads have been known to strip out!

They guy that use to own the car said he lost alot of stuff when "messing with the car" so it could be possible that he just lost the studs so all I will have to do is just replace the studs. Is there anyway I can tell if it needs to be helicoiled before I take off the exhaust manifold?

umm, hmmmm, ig uess if your finger is small enough, you could stick it in the hole, and see if you feel any threads... :icon_wink

Or you could try and screw a stud in, but it will probably just slide in and out...

so, yea, you will have to take the manifold off, it's easy to get off, etting the turbo back on is the hard part IMO...

It's highly unlikely that someone would forget to put 3 out of 7 studs in. But it's worth a shot. Chances are that they will strip before you get enough torque on them to fix the exhaust leak. If the leak has been there for a while then the gasket should probably be replaced but that requires pulling the turbo and manifold off and if you do that then you would want to do the helicoils weather they are immediately needed or not.

I go the new header studs, bolts and a new gasket today. I started to screw one of the studs in place just to see if the holes were stripped, i got about 10 turns on the stud before it got tough to turn by hand so I am guess everything is okay. The gasket has a smooth and rough side, I was wondering which side goes where? I am guessing the smooth side goes against the head and the rough side against the header, but feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Also since I have never done it before, is there and right and wrong way to install new header studs and bolts? I just want to know so I don't mess stuff up worse.
