take the turbo off and pull the manifold. then put on new gaskets. while you have the manifold off upgrade the studs with longer ones. I forget the exact length but there is alot of space behind the stock studs. I will be doing mine when I pull my engine bay apart for a new paint job next year.

It is common for the threads to pull out of the head, causing the leak you describe. May have to repair the threads.

+1. Most 7M heads need at least 2 or 3 of the studs helicoiled.

I used the DriftMotion exhaust stud upgrade kit while I had mine apart recently. 2 bolts completely gone so I went ahead and upgrading 4 out of the 7 (the other 3 may as well have been welded in as they wouldn't budge).

Helicoiling itself isn't too bad of a job. If you can work a drill and turn a wrench you can helicoil.

The hard part will be the rear couple of studs. Not much room there with it still in the car. There are plently of threads about how people use 90 degree drill adapters and 'stubby' drill bits. If I can find one I'll update my post with links.

I wouldn't pay anything more then a couple of dollars for a kit. Since you can get a long bar of the exact same stud, at a hardware store for dirt cheap. We got one for my friend in Germany and it was less then $10 and he has been using it for 2 years running over 14psi. Save the cash, use a tap and die, and set the block up for the new studs. Then you can cut off as much or little as you need.

the 7/16 helicoil kit ran my $20-30. The short shank bit was $4-5 and the 7/16 coarse/fine thread studs where $2-3 a piece.

Here's my personal input... This was the first or second repair I did when i got the car. new to older cars like this I figured I'd helicoil with stock size and save some bucks. Few weeks later the helicoils pulled out with the threads. Had to go back in and redo ALL of them for the 7/16 studs. I spent twice what i should have. Step back and ask yourself how many times you want to do the job..
