What are all of the possible causes? My car smells like exhaust fumes after 30 or so minutes of driving. I know this is dangerous and I need to get fixed asap. Plus my girlfriend doesn't like the smell 2 much either. I did a lil bit of research. So far I know it could be from an exhaust leak or the seals around my hatch going since the exhaust comes out from the back and when driving a hatchback at speed, the rushing air creates a vacuum that keeps the exhaust gases around the hatch and if my seals are going then it can let those exhaust fumes in through the rear. I read that online somewhere, is that true? Driving with the windows down doesn't help with the smell too much but at least i know fresh air is coming in. Any idea's?

I get the same smell when I drive my 92T with the sunroof or windows open. I found out that the manifold gasket is leaking. The side of the engine is white from the exhaust fumes so I know it's leaking there. I haven't fixed it as yet because I'm thinking it might be a tough job to remove the turbo but I'll get to it someday.

Thanks
Darren

You might want to do that soon. I dont know if you know this, but carbon monoxide can kill you.

thanks guys for all the responses, dam i luv this forum. And im still n/a so it could be my exhaust manifold. The previous owner had it heat wrap to i have to remove all of that crap to even look at it. And the weatherstripping around the hatch is completly crap. Also it seems that because the hatch struts are not working, he wedged something in between the hatch and the roof to keep it up and from him wedging there is a big gap where the top of the hatch and the rear of the roof meet on the driver side. its not leaking any water but im sure fumes are gettin through. But again thanks for the all the info.

For right now as a temporary fix, i just drive with the windows cracked open and the heat on blast, cause its still winter here. Prolly this weekend coming up, ill prolly replace the weather stripping around the hatch. As far as anything engine related, unless its a free fix, i dont plan on touching it cause i dont plan on having the n/a in there that much longer.

Had a similar issue with my 87 N/A. Turned out to be a hole in my muffler feeding into a hole in my spare tire well!

Sometimes you can take a flashlight at night of course, and shine it along the exhaust and see were the exhaust maybe leaking.

This is a big one people dont think about but the opening out of the exhaust valve cover. I had this open for a while and it fucked me up. I lost some brain cells.

My old N/A had a leak between the manifold and DP, and you could tell by holding your hand near the two, and revving the engine a little. It was also colored white-ish too, where it was leaking.

I would try the hand-near-cold exhaust inspection, to see if you can feel/smell/hear exhaust leaking while you are under the hood. I'm guessing it's coming from up front, but exhaust gases find their way in through anywhere.

If it is a big enough exhaust leak you may be able to feel it if you hold your hand close. Just don't touch any thing after the cars been running for 30 mins! Btw, what kind of exhaust do you run? Have a catalytic converter?
