I have an 88 Supra thats getting a new engine and have heard a story of someone putting a really beefy engine into a supra and the first time he launched it he twisted his frame and the doors popped open. I've heard the supra has a U-body frame that uses parts of the body for the frame and can twist easily, is any of this Possible? The engine will be a done up chevy 400 with drag slicks so I am a bit worried about the frame. Any input on the topic is appreciated.

I hear the subframe is weaker than the frame. The frame will hold what you can put to it but reinforcing your subframe is probably a good idea for high torque/horsepower engine.

And I believe this should be moved to the General Section

Thread moved.

I know several people with well over 500whp who have cracked their subframes. I don't know anyone who has twisted their body without a collision.

Are you sure this Supra expert wasn't talking about a Tercel?

my car's previous previous owner bottomed out on a curb or a rock or something huge and theres a dent on the frame connectors (i think thats what theyre called) it seems like alot of damage but the car is straight still and it doesnt shift or crab walk.

There maybe guys running serious power on a stock frame. But that is with the 7M, I'm not sure how a stock frame would handle a motor like the Chevy 400 that produces high torque numbers right off the line. I doubt there would be a problem, but it should be taken into consideration the torque differences between the 7M and the Chevy, they are very different motors, and abuse the frame in very different ways.

nope it will be fine but go over the sub frame and see if sub bushing are shot if they are then cheak your sub frame and traling arm's these tend to bend fomr massize wheel hope that happens caus eof worn out subframe bushings

other then that i cna not see an issue if the cars sub frame and such are in good shape if it ant rusted to shit or bent she will take any thing you through at it

oh yae the frame rails and the floor int eh supra tend not to bend to easy

oh yae supra spentiong suck's so you most liklt spin any way
