If this info is already available on the site I have been unable to find it. I need to ID a jdm engine I bought in order to make sure I buy the correct engine harness. Engine # is 7M 0400925. Any Help?

Match the harness to your year of car, not to the engine.

Thanks Jeff, but I did not give enough info. Bought a jdm engine with harness and ecu. Engine came with grey plug harness and ecu with all labels crudely scratched off. Car is 87 targa auto/na. Engine is turbo/auto but am using the big 5-speed. Have no problem adapting from auto to 5-speed, but the jdm harness is too short. If I don't know what year engine I have, how can I match up a harness?

ya that is correct. so you need a 87-88 turbo harness and ecu. unless you want to use the gray plugs, lengthen the harness and repin the connectors to work with the early body harness.

My point is, that it doesn't matter what year engine you have. Unless you want to enter a world of pain, you're going to want to get the electronics (ECU/harness/sensor(s)) that match your year of car, and forget about what year the engine is, the year of the engine is of very little importance.

As for telling what year the engine is based on the engine number, I unfortunately am not aware of any information out there to decipher that for you, but like I said, it matters not.

The actual differences in the engines between years is minor at most. The differences in harnesses, etc. is quite a bit larger. If you get an 87-88 harness and ECU, as well as a few miscellaneous other parts (HAC sensor, etc.), you can run any year 7M-GTE you'd like and have it work properly.

If you find out you have a 1992 engine, and try to run a 1992 harness/ECU, nothing will plug in, and you'll be changing connectors and repinning things like no tomorrow.

Decide what your setup will be, and get the appropriate parts for that setup. If you have a USA-spec 87 and are trying to make it a Turbo/5-speed, get a LHD 87-88 7M-GTE 5-speed harness and ECU. This is of course the ideal setup, and automatic harness/ECU can be used as well, with a couple modifications.

Hope this helps.

Yes, this helps very much. So many others have said run what came with your engine, or other rewire ideas, but sounds like you know the best answer. I will start shopping for correct parts and thanks for your help. rf

I BELIEVE 87-88 is gonna be a yellow plug harness, the grey plug will be later years.

I'm sure Jeff will chime back in to confirm.

I have a 88 manual yellow plug harness if you want, PM me if interested.

price for 88 turbo harness? Ecu available? Thanks.
