Is there a way to identify a 7m turbo block from a non turbo? I mean if you were to go look at a car and it has the turbo and all how can you tell if it is a turbo engine and not a na engine with a turbo on it?

The biggest reason I asked that question was I have two supras ( one as a parts car) and one of the engine blocks has a serial number stamped by the 7M stamping and the other one only has the 7M stamp. Does anyone know what that means?

Turbo blocks have oil squirters under the cylinder bores that spray onto the underside of the pistons.

You could also look for an open oil drain flange on the passenger side of the block by the motor mount. A GE would have this blocked off.

Turbo engines have turbo drains and feeds already drilled and tapped and 2 knock sensors.

Early gte's didnt have oil squirters.

All blocks have numbers. They dont mean a thing really tho unless yours happens to be numbers matching which doesnt increase value at all.

new block jap block us blocks cad blocks aus blocks all have numbers. Brake clean the greese and you will see them

No one in there right mind is going to go through all the trouble and money to reproduce 1 block and not make a ton of money off selling 100 of them.

What about the turbo engines.... How can you differentiate the ones for 87-90 and 91-92 block.. I remember somebody said there is a difference between these two..

All engines have numbers on them period.

There is a difference between turbo engines and n/a engines.

Then there is a difference between early blocks and late blocks which happened somewhere around 89-90.

All turbo blocks have turbo feed and drain holes drilled and tapped. Most turbo blocks had oil squirter's. Early blocks didn't have them

Later block were about 3mm thicker all around and to notice it there are more ribs around the block. Most noticeable was the exhaust side as it had a rib in between each cyl and a rib on each cyl.

IJ. has perfect pics of this ill try looking for them.

There is a sticky now in teh 7mgte engine.

There is no difference for the turbo part from 87-92 turbo blocks other than the new casting which happened for both n/a and turbo.
Turbos have turbo drain and feed already drilled and taped like i already said. You cannot copy orig casting.

They also have 2 knock sensors already tapped.

Edit: the main ribbing is thicker on the newer blocks.

Not all blocks have serial numbers. At least mine doesn't. I picked up a second engine to rebuild and it has numbers but the one current in my car has no number and the numbers were not ground off because the machining marks are uniform across the pad where 7m is stamped

Every NA block I have seen had all 3 knock sensor holes drilled and tapped, just like the turbo blocks.
As do my turbo blocks.
The only difference there is that the turbo has sensors screwed into the 2 outer ones, and the NA has 1 screwed into just the center one.
So that is no way to tell.
And the 89 NA block I have in the shop also has the extra ribs on the left side, like my 91 turbo block.
Looking at all my blocks, the only difference externally is the turbo drain back hole.
And if someone did a NA-T conversion, drilling and tapping that one flange is not that big of deal.
So probably the only way to tell is to look inside the block for the oil squirters.

The ribs is for newer vs older blocks. Not turbo vs n/a.

Also early turbo blocks didnt have squirters.
