The car I bought has an engine that was imported from Japan and purchased thru "Tokyo Motors", its a factory turbo engine (with papers and all) but it uses a rotary ignition with a seperate coil (if you understand) instead of the regular coil pack, and its exactly the same as a 7mgte !! any ideas?? is this better or worse??:aigo: :aigo: :aigo:

someone did something screwy then. I could be wrong, but as far as I know, no 7M-GTE motor ever cam with a distributor.

Are you sure that its a GTE motor and not a GE with a turbo add? Is the oil feed and return as per stock GTE block or has are they custom? Also if the motor is out, then you can also take the pan off and see if it has piston oil squirters.

The other possiblity is that someone rewired it to use GE ignition components. Why they would have done this, how knows, but it can easily be done.

Many of the JDM GTE engines came without oil squirters.
Hey !!! I just found out by the original owner that the engine is an original 7mgte ! But since the car is an original n/a they preffered not to do all the hassle of re-wiring of the ecu and coil pack and used the original ecu of the non turbo with the distributor ! Obviously the coil pack gives better spark but that can easily get fixed ! Also they tested the car on a dyno and the engine did not lose any ponies due to the n/a ecu !! And guess what ! No boost cut !! The car has awsome power, the original intercooler got damaged so I decided to order a FMIC. I put the car to run with turbo only for the time being to be able to go to work. It has no intercooler what so ever not even a blow off valve right now, the hoses are old and cracked, but I went to the strip and ended up giving it a pass just for the hell of it (thanks to the beer!), I took off slow and punched it, it did 2.6 in the first 60ft (sucks) and then did 9.8 in the 1/8, thats when it started to heat up due to the hot air going in and it stuttered for a while crossing the 1/4 doing 15.4 ! So with the new front mount installed,2.5 mandrel bent piping, tial blow off valve and cranking the boost up to 14psi I should do alot better right ? What do you think??

This is interesting.. i cant wait to see what others say.
Thats right guys !!!! Use the non-turbo ecu with the distributor and you can keep the original horsepower and have NO BOOST CUT !! And Dyno PROVEN !!!!!!! My Supra is like that right now!!!!

but how does the distributer go into the engine? does still run off the cam? it seems like this would be a hard set up, but im getting my GTE in the summer and could save some money on using my N/A ECU and dis. and no fuel cut!?!? SWEEEEEET!!
thanks -Brian

The heads are the same from N/A to turbo.. of course the cams in it are different.. but the distributor would be installed and set just as the CPS is.

I'm more interested in using the N/A AFM.. its gotta have some drawbacks?

Actually no! The only small difference(and you cant even tell) is that the N/A AFM reads a bit slower than the Turbo AFM...but with the N/A AFM you have no limitations ! You can add all the boost, gas or so on and it will take it with no problems!!! There are several Supras here in P.R. set up that way and they are putting out the same horsepower and even more with this settup!
