I heard on another forum that 1jzgte's will not pass emissions here. Is this true? Also, if I take a car that was originally a non-turbo to the emissions, will they see the engine code on the 1jz and then get the insurance company to charge me twin-turbo insurance rates??

And yes, I did search the forums some. I only came up with threads that didnt fully answer my questions and were outdated (8 month old).

THanks !

you can pass if you know what you're doing. Some states you can pass straight up. other states, it's gonna take a bit more 'work' ;)

I've had my 1J for a bit over a year now. Had to smog it a few months ago. I have up to date insurance and current registration tags. It's not that hard to pass. :]

insurance? why tell them? how would they know? they don't need to know... don't tell them.

It's probably real nice for the people who had NAs then swapped. NA insurance rates.

Yeah, but won't they see that my car is supposedly a 3.0l. Won't they get suspicious if they see '2500' printed on the engine? Or are they not that smart down at the emissions department...

And yeah, if it all works out, I'll have a 1jz and only pay insurance for a 18yearold car w/ na =)

what state do you live in? check your smog requirements and laws. Then you'll know if it will be easy as just making sure you have a cat on your car to pass smog or if you'll need that extra 'work' to pass.

Insurance will never know unless you tell them. And how would they know the engine code? Do you know how hard it is to see the code on a 1J?

Emissions are another thing. Can be done, but you gotta know the loopholes

Also remember that the engine itself does not look out of place in the MK3 bay, so its not something I would worrk about with insurance. Plus NO ONE from your insurance co is gonna pop the hood.

As for emissions its possible to make them pass a sniffer, but its gonna cost you too. Visual is another story it will not pass unless you get someone who doesnt know or doesnt care.

But your probably going to have to end up trading "sexual services" for emissions.:bigthumb: :greddy:

well here, you tell them its a hot-rod, w/ an engine never put into these cars in North America. They tell you okay, and then you have this 10000X better chanc at emissions.

that's what i did for my friend. though, i have hookups at an emissions testing. we got his SR20 to pass no problem. the limit is increased by 6 fold or something.

but clarify, what is the problem with using this method? i heard the engine has to be bigger than the original engine that came with the car, and some other crap?

not even close.

by law you cant put in a motor that was never offered here. so the 1jz is out.

also, any engine you put in your car that was sold in america, has to be of the same year or newer than the engine that origionally came with your car.
