ok so here in the great state of missouri:icon_roll we have to have emisions. my freind took his 87 mk3 up there and it didnt pass due to the hc. so its running to rich. how can he fix this temp.? he has a lex afm. 550 injectors. boost is at 9 pounds. filter. 3 inch exhaust. has a cat. and a bov(cant recall what type) so how can we get his car to pass? is there any way to ajust it richer without buying anything else? would lowering or raising the boost help. would tighting the bov to were it didnt really blow off help? is there anyway to adjust the afm. iv heard of some skrew that you have to drill out or something.

thanks for any advice!

you can drill out the lex screw and back it out and that should lean him out some. look at the afm and one side will be molded. the other side will have a little silver disk thats about as big as the nail on your pinky finger. drill that silver disk out (1/4 in think iirc) and use a flathead screwdriver and back it out. this will lean it out but he might want to check his 02 sensor, tighten the bov, and look for boost leaks

Regardless of trying to fix the real problem here...

I say just remove the PCV hose from the accordion pipe and run it again at the emissions tester.

The hole in the accordion will suck in some serious un metered air and will lean you out.

**again... I'm saying to 'fix' the emssions deal.**

it was really lean like more then twice whats aloud. i didnt think about the o2 sensor maybe being bad. thanks though we will try it.

pulling the pcv line will work until you pcm goes into closes loop. the o2 sensor will read a leaner mix than its used to and add more fuel. id just put in an AFC he probobly needs one any way.

I disagree, the amount of air pulled in isn't really enough to spike the o2 sensor.
Also, personally witnessed, have seen some actually on the dyno pull the hose to get passed FCO.

By the standards set in all 50 states by the federal government, that is a failure. If your population density is low enough, enforcement is not required. By the book, you can not tamper with emission equipment that is properly running. And then, you can only fix it.

it didnt pass due to the hc
HC is unburnt fuel.
is there any way to ajust it richer without buying anything else?
 Why are you trying to make it richer if if just failed for being too rich?

inspect the ic lines looking for cracks and CUTS!!!! cuts are alot harder to see and usually only open up when pressure builds up in the pipes. best way is to get a pressure tester (they are advertised over on SF) for like $50 i think. nad in your first post you said you were rich and had high HC, this is also an indication of running rich. you have an underlying problem and we are just trying to trouble shoot quick ways around it but there is something else there that is causing you to run rich.

in illinois they dont look under the hood or under the car! i was worried when i went because i dont have a cat but they didnt say anything, neeedles to say , i failed, from HC.

i think turning down the boost would probobly help.

so if your hitting FC you can pull that screw out and it will do exactly what?

well thats an added bonus thing. it allows more air to bypass the sensor and raises the amount of boost you can run.

theres your problem....no cat

i hope you have a test pipe, a friend of mine had his cat-back attached/made on the DP. the result was he needed to chop the cat-back and make a test pipe. if you have emissions a test pipe is a must so you can swap for a cat to go to emissions!!!

yeah i have a test pipe, i know i can just swap in my cat. And yes i know i failed because i didnt have a cat, i wasnt asking that. And im also really positive that just the cat wont make me pass, cuz i more than quadrupled the hc limit.
