Not sure if this should be in the other engine tech or here in general mkiii. I just finished watching the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car" and am wondering if anyone has done an EV conversion of a mkiii or mkiv. Just wondering if anybody else besides me finds this interesting.

That was the biggest mistake the US automakers made... Imagine where the technology would have made it by ow, if it hadn't been suppressed.

Saw the video awhile back and thought of trying to do it to my spare 1990. Can probably do for under $5K, but still limited distances/speeds (since the MKIII is already heavy). Instead, I almost bought an RX7 shell (one of the newer models) for doing it.

Fing Tesla and others are going to cost near the $100K mark.

That film was a real eyeopener. Makes me want to keep my distance from these money grubbing fiends that call themselves the American auto industry... They put out this stupid assed garbage like the H2/H3 hummer. The closest car to american I've ever owned was a geo prism but everybody knows its just a rebadged corolla.

I dunno about too heavy... they use the tech on city buses now, and those aren't lightweight by any stretch of the imagination.

I'd like to see it done for sure.

Sure would make traction control easy!

keep in mind that electric motors have all their torque above 0 rpm. I think that causes problems cause when tesla added another speed to their 1speed tranny, it started breaking on them

There is a site on the net of a guy who is doing this, sorry to be so vague :biglaugh:. He had pics, and he showed this huge electric motor he was mounting under the hood. It was roughly the size of a 30-40 gal drum. He even had it mounted to the tranny, but he didn't update for a long time and I lost the site. It was into an mk3 btw if anyone cares anymore about my story. It's true.

Awww damn. I would very much like to see that site.

I did it into a rx7 before. I used a 11" 120v dc motor through the stock tranny and had to use fifteen 9v batteries to power it. Gave me a range of 60 miles or so.
From my experience it is only worth it if you are going to use lithium ion batteries because anything else is too heavy. If you have any questions fire away.

i would love to see someone do a hybrid setup on a mk3... with the standard driveline still in place, and a pair of electric motors in the front hubs... would have to be the least stressful (on the original driveline) way of adding 50, 100 or more hp.... and good for fuel consumption at the same time....

and how would you power those two motors? Wouldn't turning up the boost be a little easier?
