Ok. so i finished everythign on my 5 speed swap, go to start it. wont click or anything. after alot of fiddlign we got the starter to crank (by charging the battery with jumper cables) but then the engine would crank, but at the same time the tach would pulse up to 2k rpm and the windshield wipers would start to go (but the switch was off). The fuel pump was kinda goign crazy like it was always "starting" up and the are near the ecu was making lots of loud click noises. we finally got it to start, but at first it stumbled alot and it just doesnt seem to run right. when i put the ignition to the on position the tach pulses a tiny bit (to about 200rpm) and the ecu are starts clicking. i can start the engine, and it seems to almost run well but it just seems a tad bit off, not as smooth as it ran before.

it seems like i may have accidentally shorted out something to do with the igniton and the windshield wipers... annny idea how i could solve this problem? i just want my car to function properly.

oh, and just to add. when the ignition is at the "on" position, the clicking is consitent and doesnt really stop. i guess it has to do with my fuel pump. but why would my tach pulse at the same time as the wiper blades going, even tho they arent on!? ugh this is so confusing

what should i check? it seems fine to me... also, to note, we accidentally made a short between the positive terminal and the intake manifold trying to jumper the starter... would that damage anything?

also, sometimes ater i turn off the ignition and tak teh key out completely, the brown relay in the engien compartment thing (the big brown box one) makes a buzzing noise. i switched that relay with another one and same problem... aghhj this is starting to make me cry!

ok besides the obvious ground wires and wiring to the igniton, do you think the tach/windshield wiper problem is something else? also, why is the open current relay or whatever trying to shut my fuel pump off? it does kinda seem like my fuel pump is pumpin too much... and it kinda smells like fuel when i start it

The fuel pump should only energize for a moment until you start.

You have an electrical backfeed from something. You need the EWD. Then find the wiper circuit and how it might get power from the ignition.

I also think you have more than one problem.

First thing to consider is if your battery cable incident caused any damage. Since a lot of current probably for a few seconds you would want to make sure all the ground straps on the engine are still functional. You could have melted some of the smaller ones like the one from the firewall to near the exhaust manifold. Also, make sure you attached all the ground straps when you put your engine/tranny back in. They are not optional.

ya.. my dad refuses to admit the short could have hurt anything but im pretty sure that didnt help. the only ground that i messed with i tightened back up and that was the one right under the intake manifold by the starter. i'm basically just looking for any suggestions where to look. i'll check all the grounds, but i think its more than just a grounding problem...

For anyone who cares, and for future reference. The problem was the battery connections. replaced both clamps, the ground to the engine, the wire from the positive to the starter and added a wing nut tie down clip to the end of the cable that goes from positive to under the fuse panel. fixed everything, starts like a charm everytime. all the weird bugs are gone too now. so.. if ever you got weird problems like this, don't underestimate the power of a good ground.

thanks man. it was the ground going to the engine block that was the bad ground. i also tidied up everything else so ya its perfect. thanks for the help. and i hope this thread helps people when they have a problem that seems so strange it seems like nothing could fix it.

I know what you mean, when my car did it i was like WTF?!? I reinstalled my turbo timer, that didnt do it, i checked everything out. I was about to give up when i decided to re-set the ECU, that didnt do it.. then i was about to give up again, and i thought hmm maybe i should disconnect my battery so i dont fry something.. so i did, and then i got the most random urge to try one last time, and then it started right up.
