12mm deep socket and a 3" extension. If you put your left hand over the EGR in between it and the firewall, you can feel with your finger tips the two nuts holding the EGR to the head. Then guide the 12mm onto the nuts and undo them.

what is the best way to go about switching out the egr.

dirty? Stuck open? Not working?

The two nuts that are on the intake manifold require either a short extension or a flex-elbox. I usually like the flex elbow apparoach, makes for an easier removal.

As figgie implied the thing is hard enough to get at that you need to be sure it's at fault before going through the hassle of removing it. If you do end up taking it off you can mod it so that future cleaning can be done without removing it. All that takes is adding a port to the intake side. That way everything on either side of the valve can be kept clean depending on what procedure you use. The port also comes in handy for testing purposes.

What would you use to clean the EGR? Just regular ol' carb cleaner?
