The egr cooler is just a crossover routing the exhaust gasses around the head. if you are running without an egr system it is not needed, you can just block off the holes. I dont recommend running without an egr system however without an aftermarket or jdm ecu.

If you don't have the cooler plate on the back of the head there is a port back there that you need to tap and plug. I you leave this open exhaust and or flame will poor out of there causing at the very least a drop in engine performance and a laggier turbo. It will also burn thru the heater coolant hose and anything else within close range. It will also be very loud. :aigo:

However if its already plugged or welded (not a good idea due to warping of the head) then you should be fine.

Heres a pic of the EGR system. If you have a JDM engine like I bought there were just some steel blockoff plates that went over the passage on the head where the exhaust gasses come from and one one the intake. I bought the egr cooler and gasket from a local toyota dealer and bought the rest from the classifieds on here. If you ever need help with how things bolt together the online TSRM and EPC is a great way to find out.

I dont reccomend running without working EGR w/o JDM ECU, B/C you will run lean in mid throttle.

Should you decide to disregard my advice, get block off plates. DO NOT run the car with that open. Guess whats right behind it? Your brake lines. With that open you will dump hot exhaust onto them, boiling your brake fluid, and when you hit your brakes the pedal will go to the floor and you will likely crash.
