EGR cooler question

Here is whats going on. On my 91 GTE motor, I have been playing with my electric fan relay for the past couple of days trying to get my fans to work again. I started up the engine to warm it up to make sure the fans come on, after thinking I fixed the problem. I then noticed there is a lot of smoke coming out the exhaust tailpipe, but since it has been cooling down around my house at night, I thought it was just condensation in the exhaust piping. Next thing I know, I have smoke pouring out of my engine bay so I shut the car off immediately and after noticing there was smoke coming out of the screamer pipe on the turbo I called it a night. Then tonight, I start up the engine, after changing a part out for the fans, and the backside of the motor starts smoking. I turned the motor off, and I noticed the bell housing of my trans is covered in either oil or coolant, and smoke is coming up from the backside of the motor. Now the only thing I know of back there is the egr cooler, but is there something else that could be causing both problems? I believe the smoke is oil being burned, but is there something in the egr cooler that could keep oil from returning to the pan and the oil is somehow finding its way into the combustion chamber? The engine was also idling ruff the second time I started the engine, and I checked both the coolant in the radiator and under the oil cap and both look to be clean. Thanks in advance for any advice.

All the EGR cooler is is a plate that bolts on to the back of the head that exhaust gases pass through on the way to the EGR. I believe there is a coolant plug back there just under the union, and I guess that could potentially leak, but I've never heard of it before. There is no oil running through the EGR cooling plate at all.

Here's a pic I found from under the cooling plate:

That hose on the union well both that is will leak 100x more often than the union. I have seen it leak on buddys cars before.

Oil could be from the valve cover gaskets or the 4 hex plugs inbetween the spark plugs.

also if your seeing smoke out the exhaust its eithe turbo, bhg, rings, or valve stem seals. Block test and compression and or leak down test will rule out bhg.

Its just oil vapor coming out. It is blue in color and I knew the motor was using a little oil, but it seems to have gotten much worse. I ended up pulling the plugs out to see the condition of them as well as check compression and my numbers are good and the plugs are actually clean. The motor runs a little lean, but for the amount of oil being expelled, there are no signs on the plugs of it. That got me thinking that the oil is leaking into the hot side of the turbo and becoming vapor there and being blown out the exhaust.
